/ Debts Wise money management in college key to post-graduation stability Welcome to the diverse community of USC. Whether you're a new student or a college veteran, changes and surprises abound among so many students arriving from small Southern towns, bustling cities and foreign countries. We are all here together, building our futures and setting goals. Attending college will give you many opportunities to form individual perspectives shaped by the events and circumstances surrounding you here. As you build your future at USC now, it is important to become money conscious. Every dollar you choose to spend affects American society as a whole. Bill Clinton is the man America chose to lead this society for the next four years. Let's look at ourselves in light of his economic reform plan. During Clinton's State of the Union address, one of his most sympathetic comments acknowledged those families and individuals who work two jobs to make ends meet. You probably know people like this, maybe your own parents, close friends or significant others. What can you personally do about this? Look at your college experience as a time to learn sound financial practices. It isn't necessary to get rich quick or accumulate symbols ot wealth that only mire a poor soul down in debt for years. True, it's fun to have a lot of money, but wastefulness in the name of short-term pleasantries is harmful to the big picture of American society. Look around you. People are in debt and working 10 and 12 hours per day. When we graduate, is this the life we have to look forward to? Don't spend too much time trying to find someone tc blame instead of taking responsibility for the problem. This is a point in time when we, as college students and emerging members of the work force, should all be careful about how we manage our money, especially those who are freshmer and on their own for the first time. Be wary of the credit carc offers that will bombard your mailbox. If you decide to get a credit card, save it for emergenciej only. Don't charge ANYTHING if you are unsure of how yoi will pay for it later. Lacking the funds to pay off a huge deb will impact your life for years down the road. Sooner or later you have to have credit references. If you make bad judgments on small amounts of mone> and acquire bad credit now, you will regret it when bank; won't loan you the big money later for that house or car. Simply be cautious with your money. There is no perfec formula for managing money, but you can take responsibilit; for the choices you make. The country as a whole will benefi from individuals like you using money wisely. It is truly up t< you to improve our economic well-being.
