Richard Harpootiian, solicitor for the FiftJ
Judicial Circuit, is an eager man, considering
the tremendous caseload he has on the docket
"I reviewed 15,000 cases last year,

Harpootlian glimpsed out from under ;
brow wrinkled into a squint, and for just;
moment, he looked very tired.
The rest of the time he is anything bu
tired. "Dick is not a nine to fiver," his secre
tary said.
Harpootlian is responsible for reviewing
and possibly prosecuting the thousands o
cases that cross his desk each year.
Harpootlian reviews all of the cases fron
Richland and Kershaw counties, then choose;
the ones to dismiss, prosecute personally 01
assign to his assistant prosecutors.
In many instances, Harpootlian does no
like to see a case go to court.

An accomplished prosecutor, Harpootli
has taken on some big cases. He successfu
prosecuted South Carolina's most notoric
serial killer, Pee Wee Gaskins. He also pro
cuted former USC President Jam
Holderman and handled the Alcoho

Harpootlian also prosecuted an envirc
mental crime in 1978, and said he is a stro
supporter of environmental protection.
"If you kill with toxic waste, then you ar<
murderer," he said, "and if you do it for
economic motive, then you are the same as
armed robber."
Harpootlian admits to being tougher i
white-collar crimes than blue-collar crim
and has made a name for himself prosecuti
white collar abuse.
Harpootlian plans to run for Attorn
