Pick-up basket!

Every time students go by the ' 1
Blatt P.E. Center on their way to '
class or Five Points they will see :
all types of people playing basket- 1
ball.
Among the players are Bill ;
Powers, a 30-year-old USC graduate,
and Mike Burgess, a 22-year- 1
old graduate student. They said
they play anywhere from two to J
five times a week.
Powers said his favorite place to
play is the P.E. Center at !
lunchtime.
"The games are strong in talent,"
Powers said. "The physical j
game they play fits my style."
In other words, Powers like to j
lower his shoulder and crack play- ,
ers in the sternum before he
shoots. ,
He mentions Heathwood Park,
Meadowlakes and Trenholm Road (
as other Columbia-area parks he (

Burgess likes the P.E. Center j
most, but said parks have a better ,
variety of players. He said he sees ,
everyone from older adults and (
high school students when he
plays at Emily Douglas Park, Hand j
Junior High School and |
Heathwood Park. - ,
Burgess thinks the competition <
level at the P.E. Center is as good i
as it ever was.
"People come and go," Burgess ]
said. "But you always have new <
players trying to prove them- ;
selves."
Powers said that in recent years <
the level of competition has dimin- ]
ished, at least in terms of the num- :

Has baseball, as well as other
professional sports, pushed the
outer limits of decency?
Let s taiK aoout some or tne
gems in the game shall we. Vince
Coleman, you'll probably see this
guy at the local firework or explosives
store.
For those who don't know or
have already forgotten, let me
refresh your memory. After a
friendly game of America's pastime,
"good old" Vince decided he
wanted to let off some steam after
the game.
Good idea, bad judgement.
Coleman threw an M-80 at a
family of Dodger fans, partially
blowing up in a baby's face. Even
though the baby was not seriously
injured, the incident upset parents,
who might possibly and should
press charges on the overpaid bum.
Coleman did go public with an
apology to the family and everyone
involved, but lets get real. He was
undoubtedly forced to do so by
Mets management in order to save

about the incident, he would have
known not to do something so stupid
and ignorant in the first place.
Coleman has not been formally
been held accountable for his
actions by the the league or the
Mets yet, but there is only one just
way in which he should. The
league, as well as the Mets, should
slap a suspension on Coleman for
the remainder of the year that
would bench his worthless butt with
no pay. If that punishment is not

The next problem in the wild
world of professional sports
involves the owners of teams and
the heads of leagues. The disciplinary
actions taken bv team heads
are merely slaps on the wrists of the
high paid players. Fining a player a
sum of $1000 dollars is like the
school bully stealing the wimps'
lunch money, or an everyday person
losing a five dollar bill. If these
are considered slaps on the wrist,
then I'm willing to go twelve
rounds with Riddick Bowe.
While we're on the topic of
money, let's talk about players
salaries. An average utility player
makes more money than the entire
star-studded championship St.
Louis Cardinal teams that broadcaster
Tim McCarver played for.
Sure the times have changed, but
professional sports are beginning to
get out of hand. Players are whining
over the extra million that is
mandatory to their well being. The
idea of team concept and loyalty
has changed, if not withered away,
with the times. Today players
change teams almost as easily as
they change a dirty uniform.
There are still loyal players like
Kirby Puckett who sacrificed that
extra million to stay with the
Minnesota Twins, the team he
loved. However, persons like
Puckett are hard to find.
No one person can be blamed for
the anarchy there is in professional
sports today, but something must be
done before the players are to unaffordable
for management.
