MOGADISHU, Somalia? Two
U.S. soldiers were wounded in an
ambush by gunmen today, bringing
the number to seven Americans
wounded in the past two
days.
Three Americans were wound
ed in overnight mortar and rocket
grenade attacks on U.N. bases,
and two Americans were injured
in a land mine explosion
Wednesday, military officials
said.
Today's ambush occurred near
Bali Dogle, about 50 miles west
of Mogadishu, said officials at
the main U.S. field hospital in
the capital.
A spokesman, who requested
anonymity, told reporters the two
soldiers underwent surgery, but
gave no further details on their
condition.
Earlier, U.N. military
spokesman Maj. Dave Stockwell
said three Americans were
wounded in overnight attacks on
U.N. bases in Mogadishu. He
said they were in stable condition.

AIDS appeared, most of today's
college students were in elementary
school and not yet concerned about
a disease that has since infected
289,320 people in the United States
alone, said a volunteer from the
National Center for Disease Control

WASHINGTON ? Congressional
negotiators settled Wednesday
on the Senate's three-year, SI.5
billion version of President Clin
ion s national service pian, setting
up a final vote on the administration's
first new program.
Aides said final consideration
of the legislation will likely come
Friday in both the House and
Senate and it could go to Clinton
for his signature before Congress
begins a scheduled month-long
recess this weekend.
The program would provide up
to 47,000 students who complete
two years of community service
work $4,725 for each year to
apply toward college tuition.
Clinton initially proposed $5,000
a year.
Participants also would be provided
living allowances of at
least $7,400 a year and healthcare
and child day-care benefits.

She also believes that recycling

ts of garbage annually, consisting
>stly of paper, glass, plastic, and

[hinks students will respond only if
it is made convenient. She also
;xpressed a concern the recycling
movement might turn out to be a
passing fad.
McKay said the problem of visibility
and convenience might be
:aused by the absence of a centrally
located collection site.
Although there are two bins on
:ampus, the Recycling Office

for their new bin donated by
Wal-Mart, she said.
Another problem for their office
is the lack of volunteers to pick up
the contents of the bins, McKaysaid.
With a crew of only three
from a campus that has 26,000, the
odds are against the program working
very well, she said.
McKay said the office is looking
for concerned students who are
willing to help them extend their
service.
