Berson, the only person ever to
coach the soccer team, begins his
16th year at the helm when the
1993 season opens Sept. 5.
"The secret to success is the quality
of the people you recruit and the
quality of the people you associate
with on your staff," Berson said.
"We've been fortunate to surround
ourselves with good people and student
athletes throughout the years."
Fortunate is not the key word. In
Berson's 15 years at USC, he has
amassed a record of 214-69-25 and
led the Gamecocks to eight NCAA
tournaments, including the 1988
Final Four.
USC's team is the only one in the
Southern Region to have gone to
the playoffs seven of the past eight
years. However, Berson would like
to focus on the future.
"We had a good recruiting year,"
ne saia. we ve orougni in several
good players who can help us right
away. The key to any good team is
having good, young players who
will learn and push the older players."
The older players include seniors
David Turner, Peter Duitsman and
Helgi Bjorgvinsson, all of whom
Berson considers key team members.

When asked about the upcominj
schedule, Berson said he is relieve*
to have eight returning starters fron
USC's '92 team, which had ;
record of 13-5-3.
"We have without question th<
toughest schedule I've had here," h
said. "We have more away games
