Gunn changes pos

Some USC football players have been
asked to switch from defense to offense to
compensate for the loss of offensive linesmen
because of graduation and not meeting
academic requirements.
Anton Gunn, a redshirt sophomore and history
major, is one such player.
Gunn, who was also recruited by Ohio
State, North Carolina State, Virginia Tech
and Temple, will be playing offensive guard
or center this season for the Gamecocks. Last
season, Gunn played defensive lineman.
Gunn, a native of Virginia Beach, Va., has
been playing football since he was 5-yearsold
and credits his mother as the most influ
tuuai ptiduu in uid auntut taitu.
"My mom is a football fanatic," he said.
"Fridays she would come to my high school
games, Saturdays she would watch her alma
mater play, and Sundays she would spend the
day watching NFL games."
Jerry Inman, a USC defensive back, said,
"Anton has a really good work ethic and ability.
From hearing the coaches, he is one of
our fastest linemen.
"I respect him as not only a good athlete
but as a disciplined person. As the season progresses,
he will only get better and better."
This summer, Gunn has been lifting
weights and running to get in shape for the
upcoming season.

Gunn said the key to winning games in thi
SEC is consistency.
"We have to play well week-in and week
out," he said. "Alabama will be the team t(
beat, but Georgia is our first challenge."
Gunn said the Sept. 23 game agains
Kentucky, to be aired nationally by ESPN
will be crucial.
"I think that game is really big for u:
because it will give USC exposure and wil
let us show what we can do on national televi
sion," Gunn said.
Having USC ranked No. 18 in Athlon';
preseason poll does not affect Gunn.
"It doesn't put pressure on us because the
team wants to win," he said. "Whether we are
picked 18th or 118th, we are going to prove
ourselves regardless of what the critics think
we can do."
When he is not playing football, Gunn likes
to listen to rap music and play Sega Genesis.

With the season opener in less than twc
months, there is no relaxation time for Gunr
and the other USC football players.
"Come out and support us this season,'
Gunn said. "We are going to show that the
Gamecocks have come to play and that the
end of last year wasn't a fluke."
