Fogler brings
winning way
By ANDREW BORGERT
Sports bditor
Eddie Fogler is a busy man these days.
USC's new basketball coach has spent the past three
and-a-half months watching high school basketball all
stars and getting to know the USC players and staff.
Why would Fogler, the consensus 1993 Nationa
Coach of the Year, want to leave a Vanderbilt progran
coming off its best season ever for a USC program tha
has searched for an identity since Frank McGuir*
retired in 1980.
"It was time to make a change," Fogler said, "not;
change for the sake of changing, but a change to i
major state institution.
"I've always felt that the best positions in coachin<
are when you are coaching somewhere that's th<
'University of.' People recognize that you are with i
major state institution.
we nave interest, tradition, lacinties. we nave j
very good conference, and I think we have very stronj
leadership now with Dr. Palms and Mike McGee."
Fogler's first major task at USC was signing player:
for this season. His 1993 recruiting class, which i:
regarded as strong for the time he had to work with
includes two foreign players, Czech Republic native Jir
Formanek and Canadian Peter Van Elswyk, but onb
one South Carolinian, Florence's Andy Bostic.
Fogler hopes to re-establish USC's in-state recruitinj
base.
"We. will rorrnit on a national basis, but certainlv
being a state university, the state itself is our numbe
one priority," he said.
The new players will face a stiff challenge becausi
there are only four returning scholarship players fron
last season: Emmett Hall, Carey Rich, Jamie Watsoi
and Norm Greene.
"Three of those four played quality minutes las
yearr" Fogler said, "so certainly we are a very young
inexperienced basketball team. That might be the ba<
news.
"The good news is it gave us an opportunity t<
recruit because of the scholarships freed up."
Fogler, a graduate of the University of Nortl
Carolina, will institute many of the offensive am
defensive principles of Dean Smith. According t<
Fogler, there is no mystery to the "Smith System."
"It is basically what every coach wants," Fogler said
"It is a system that emphasizes teamwork, it empha

n sizes defense, it emphasizes ball movement. That's the
t way basketball should be played.
"There's a way to play the game of basketball and
j that's unselfishly and that's very hard and that's intelligent.
Our teams are mostly motion offense basketball
:) teams and multiple defenses, changing defenses to try
to keep the (opposition's) offense off-balance."
h With a team that is young and in transition, Fogler is
[j realistic about the upcoming season. He is also con0
vinced the program will once again be a national
power.
I. "It takes time to build a quality basketball program,"
- Fogler said. "But we'll get it done."
