Players shuffle By ROB RODUSKY Columnist Another NBA draft has come and gone and many former college players are going to be millionaires. This was the first time since the Cleveland Cavaliers acquired Brad Daugherty in 1986 that the No. 1 pick was traded. Enough of history. This draft was very rich in talent so no one really hurt themselves. Let's get down to business and see how some teams and players did. Why they chose Geert Hammink, Shaq's backup at LSU, is anyone's guess. The Detroit Pistons got immediate backcourt help by having backto-back first round picks. Lindsey Hunter and Allan Houston are going to be the heir apparents to Isiah Thomas and Joe Dumars. A pretty tall order, but for these two great athletes, it's a rather easy one. Rider gets the award for talking the most trash before he puts on a Minnesota Timberwolf uniform. I mean he already promised to win the Slam Dunk title if he was entered. Look for him to be Rookie of the Year however. Shawn Bradley, the guy who hasn't played basketball in two years was taken second. Is he a risk for the Philadelphia 76'ers, considering they already have a T 6" player? No way. He is more coordinated thon CAmo nonnlo rtitro Kim for. After all he batted .400 as a baseball player in high school. Too bad for little Bobby Hurley. He is going to the pathetic Sacramento Kings. It's good for him that he won a lot at Duke because he won't win too many games here. Jamal Mashburn already has his own shoes coming out, "Monster Mashes." Cool name. New Dallas Maverick's coach Quinn Buckner hopes they will bring some victories to a team that was awful last season. Who will be the big flop? Who will be the surprise? Will any of these players hit the dreaded "wall?" Can any of these guys guard Michael Jordan? Only time will tell. n n r? n ?11 ~~ii ii II izdi j i jr _ji : ?? VJ U I I ?0@S?g0? (??srthgtP Columbia. J Whether running only for recre- i ational purposes or planning to ] compete in road races, beginners , do not usually bother to find out enough about how they should 1 train and prepare for such a physi- 1 cal strain. It is not surprising, therefore, when errors in training lead to injuries. "Most recreational runners try to do too much, too soon," said Mark Bedenbaugh, a training con- sultant and two-time State Coach of the Year at Pelion High School. "Preparation for distance running ( takes months, and it should be very slow and gradual." One should increase the amount k of weekly training by only 10 per- ( cent. So if you start with 25 miles 1 your first week, you should not * increase your mileage by more 1 than 3 miles over the next week of 1 training, Bedenbaugh said. Recreational runners tend to get i greedy, push too hard and injuries such as sore ligaments or tendinitis t can catch up with you. Eric Ashton, Olympic marathon rials qualifier and member of the strictly Running team in Columbia, combines distance ranting, speed work, swimming and >icycling. He stresses the imporance of sprinting, even if you are a narathoner. "The myth that speed equals njury is wrong," Ashton said. Quick running drills develop style hat prevents injuries." Those anaerobic exercises with short recovery periods in between series of half-mile or mile repeats prepares a body for the lack of oxygen during the race, Bedenbaugh said. The longest runs, between 12 and 18 miles, come on Sundays, with Monday, Wednesday and Friday reserved for easy aerobic six- to eight-mile runs. This is, of course, assuming one is already in top shape. Ashton's Monday training, however, differs from those of most other runners. He tries to prepare his body for marathon efforts, so he runs about 90 minutes at the same pace he would run during a marathon. Ashton considers Monday the most important day of his training. If you plan to start running or you are not sure if you are doing it right, consider Ashton's advice: Keep it fun, and do some speed work, even if you are running only for your health.
