Terry Dixon became only the second student
at USC to receive the Barry Goldwater scholarship,
which encourages undergraduate students
nationwide to pursue careers in math and
natural sciences.
The Goldwater scholarship for undergraduate
students pays for tuition, books, fees and
room and board up to $7,000.
Goldwater was a United Suites senator from
Arizona who ran for president in 1964 and was
considered by many to be a right-wing segregationist.
Dixon said Goldwater may have been a segregationist,
but that it doesn't bother him.
"I'm the opposite of Goldwater, but I
applied for the Goldwater scholarship because
it helrvs students who are interested in respareh
in math and natural sciences," he said.
"It's not die Barry Goldwater scholarship to
foster his political legacy," Dixon added.
Dixon said research is his favorite area in
biology.
"I like research because it makes you feel
like you're on the cutting edge," he said.
Terry is a junior biology major from Aynor.
He is also in the South Carolina Honors
College.
He says he decided to major in biology
because he's always liked it and his father got
him interested in it..
"My father's job doesn't have anything to
do with biology, but he majored in it, and he
has helped me with it," he said.
"My parents and friends are always encour

Dixon's roommate, chemistry and marine
science major Brian K. Nunnally, said he
couldn't think of a person more worthy than
Dixon.
"Terry and 1 became friends at governor's
school in 1989," he said. "We were suitemates
and were in the same program.
"It's not a surprise to me that Terry earned I
the Goldwater. His research skills are incredi- fl
ble. His academic skills are great. He has a j|

Nunnally, who also applied for the
Goldwater scholarship, said he knew he had a jHrV
chance when he applied for die scholarship,
but knew Dixon would get it when he applied.
One piece of advice Dixon offers USC students
is to persevere.
"Don't let anybody ever tell you diat you
can't do something," he said.
In the past, people have told him he couldn't
do certain things. Dixon said as a result it's
common to have to prove yourself to doubtful
people. riiT?MW
