uprising martyrs

past, members of Germany's

The Bundestag, Parliament's
lower house, began its regularly
seheduled session by marking the
50th anniversary of the Nazis'
brutal quashing of the Warsaw
ghetto uprising.
Speaker of Parliament Rita
Suessmuth delivered an address
praising the courage of Jewish
fighters who resisted the Nazis
inside the Warsaw ghetto.
The ghetto defenders "knew
their struggle was ultimately hopeless.
They couldn't save their
lives, but they could save their

ceremonies in Warsaw on
Monday, said she left the Polish
capital with a special message to
