Blackwell said the majority of |
his customers who attend USC are

most undergraduates aren't familiar

Immaculate Consumption serves

"This is a great play that showcases
the power of love," said
director Ann Dreher, a USC theater
professor. "While it's definitely a
comedy, there are also poignant
moments and serious undertones. It
should be a real crowd-pleaser."
The play originated offBroadway.
It was sold out through

The play stars graduate students
Todd Breaugh as Peter, Angela

disease that has a strong impact on
the black community. 1991 U.S.
figures state one in ten blacks have
the trait and one in 400 suffer from
die disease.
The Iota Chi chapter of Delta
Sigma Theta sorority and the Zeta
Epsilon chapter of Kappa Alpha
Psi fraternity are trying to increase
awareness about this deadly disease.
The two organizations are sponsoring
a sickle cell anemia screening
and fund-raising drive today.
Sickle cell screening will be held in
Russell House room 203 from 11
a.m. to 4 p.m., and money will be
collected on Greene Street for the
James R. Clark Sickle Cell Anemia
Foundation.
Cleoka Thompson, Delta Sigma
Theta community service chairwoman,
said the event provides an
important service.
Thompson said many people
who cany the trait for sickle cell
aren't aware of it. This can be
especially harmful if they marry
another carrier, because the disease
can be passed on to their children,
she said.
"This gives them an opportunity
to find out more about the trait,"
Thompson said. "This is a disease
people really don't know much
about."

because sickle cells don't carry as
much oxygen and iron as normal
cells. Symptoms of this ailment
include jaundice and shortness of
breath.
Sickle cells block blood flow in
the body, which causes tissue
destruction and pain. These periods
of pain are referred to as "crises."
The frequency of these crises
varies from person to person.
An unusual facet of the disease is
thai even those who carry the trait
but do not have the disease can
experience symptoms.
Having the trait is a condition
called Sickle-C. Sufferers have
minor crises when their tissue suffer
low oxygen levels, such as during
exercise.
"I would just like to encourage
anyone if they're able to donate
money," Thompson said. "I'm sure
the foundation can use all the help
they can get."
Charles Douglas, a member of
the Zeta Epsilon chapter of Kappa
Alpha Psi fraternity, also said
knowing more about sickle cell is
vital.
"A lot of people aren't sure if
they do have the traits, dominant or
otherwise, in their body," Douglas
said. "It's important to know."
Douglas said his fraternity has a
particular interest in sickle cell
because one of its pledges was
stricken with the disease. He said
because of this, Kappa Alpha Psi is
eager to assist the foundation. ^
"I'd like people to know that it's
important that they do get tested,"
Douglas said. "I think it's important
that they're aware of what's
out there."
