TO McGee first b Lost in all the excitement of the gHPPl naming of Bobby Cremins as USC's WpmmL head coach was the - JB job that Athletic Director Mike McGee Idid in getting Cremins to come to Carolina. P McGee used his fine administrative C O U skills to lure one of 1???? the nation's finest coaches to a troubled program. What is especially great about what McGee did is what he did not do. He did not pressure Cremins to take the job by issuing ultimatums to him, while at the same time, he made it known to Bobby that he was the school's first choice. He read Cremin's emotions and feelings and let him work out the ambivalence he felt towards leaving Georgia Tech and the program he spent 12 years building. While the media was building up Cremins as the next Gamecock coach, Cremins was in the midst of liiiiMiiug up ins season ai iecn. McGee gave Cremins the opportunity to do just that. "I like the way Mike handled me, he always told me to go ahead and coach my team first," Cremins said. Thank God Cremins did that. McGee did a wonderful job in hiring a coach that had enough integrity to honor the responsibilities he already had. If Cremins were the coach here and another school was trying to get him as their head coach for the next season, I would certainly expect Bobby to coach the 'Cocks just as hard as if it were his first game here. The way Cremins coached Tech at the end of the year is obviously a symbol of the commitment that Cremins will give to the Gamecock basketball program. The entire process or ninng L remms is a tribute to the personal character of both Cremins and McGee. They respected one another enough not to do anything to pressure the other to act prematurely or to create any false pretenses in the whirlwind of rumors that had everyone wondering what was going on. Misinformation easily could have been created by both parties and caused the negotiations to fail. That aspect of the school ai the program seemed to be ve important to Cremins. He repeate ly referred to Homer Rice, tl Athletic Director at Georgia Tec with nothing but praise. If US was not blessed with an admini trator as well respected as Mil McGee, the final decision Cremin's mind might not ha> been "yes", especially considerii how difficult a choice it was f< Cremins to make. However, the two overridin factors in Cremins decision I become coach at USC were tf need for "a change, a new cha lenge" and the desire to return I his alma mater. Even though McGee was not th main reason whv Bobbv decided ti come here, he did, however, have lot to do with Cremin's decision ti come here Wednesday.
