Monday, March 22, 1993 .Cremins ob Gamecock Speculation has continued to mount over | whether or not Bobby ^ppppi Cremins will be the fljfjgi next head basketball coach at Carolina. He is not only the I % 7 most popular candidate I | for the position, but he is also die best candidate. Cremins has a K E \ long list of credentials C O U that makes him the top __________ choice for Athletics Director Mike McGee and USC I President John Palms. I First and foremost among his i credentials is that he has a proven : track record for running a clean program. USC is a school that is in < desperate need of stability and 1 credibility. As everyone knows, the Gamecocks have had trouble i staying out of trouble and turmoil. The only headlines and attention ; this school has received have been 1 the result of scandals and viola- I tions. i With Bobby as coach, the bas- ' ketball program would get their < first dose of positive national atten- 1 tion in a long time. Carolina and Cremins have been a hot topic for < Hicpiiccinn nn inct qhruit pvptv rnl- : W.. JUO. y lege basketball show. USC would : I probably get a lot more attention if < they were to lure Cremins here. i The hiring of Cremins might generate enough interest in the bas- j ketball team to get more national < television appearances next year. 1 The Gamecocks had only one < ESPN appearance this year. 1 Another reason why Cremins is 1 a prime candidate for the coaching < vacancy is the fact that he is good at dealing with the media. This < I aspect of a coaches job is very ] important, and it is a role that I Steve Newton did not seem com- ; tortable handling. Coming Irom i Murray State, he probably was not prepared for the constant media 1 attention he would receive from I being at Carolina and in the SEC. ] Cremins has been in the ACC ! spotlight for over a decade now < work BRIT> student exchange emp campus presentation sp Wednesday, M 3:30 pm Russ Room 2 & display/info table Russell House Lobk visit sponsored by USC Interi Campus tel: 8(K j^UISL&C Wa ' CLASS IS IN IA ml Y O U W DON'T V NEED ONE OF VV I We know. s Your alarm clock didn't go S off and now you only have ten F minutes till class. A positive and well-spoken coach has a lot to do with the image that a school takes on. Carolina could use the change in image that Bobby would I I N give it. L y ? r Cremins has the _______ support of the alum ni, booster club and Lhe fans. Any coach that comes into the situation that the Gamecocks are in right now needs a great deal ot support. Even if Cremins is not very successful in his first year as :oach, the pressure to win won't build up on the program like it would if McGee were to bring in someone other than Cremins. If McGee's choice were to have a bad season, then most people would have an "I told you so" mentality about his choice. And even if that coach were to win, people would most likely say, "Fine, now do it everv vear like Bobbv would have if he were here." In addition, Cremins is an immediate crowd pleaser and could have tm impact on ticket sales in a season that will see the Gamecocks :oming off of their worst campaign in over twenty years. When Carolina Coliseum is packed with fans, it can be an exciting place to watch a game. Right now, the program needs excitement. Carolina fans probably won't be willing to sit around for a few years waiting for something to get excited about. Besides all of those qualities, Cremins is a flat-out good coach. He took his Georgia Tech team to the 1990 Final Four and guided this year's squad to the ACC tournament championship. Cremins is also a great recruiter. He is one of the best recruiters in the country, and Carolina needs players, witn tneir jump to tne SEC two years ago, Carolina entered into a new era in their bas: <D MN loyment program eakers from London larch 24th ell House 02 5 9:30am-3pm >y (or outside) lational Programs Office 3 777-8440 CIEE urveillance cameras on all floors, ihuttlecock service around cam>us, either furnished or unfurlished apartments and more. With the money you'll save n spare tires, you can buy an larm clock that works. | Where home isn't far away. oc tbam ice to head program ketball program. That move necessitates that Carolina bring in a higher caliber of players. Good coaching can make up for a deficiency in talent only for so i long. If the Gamecocks are to compete and win on a regular basis ' against the likes of Jamal t Mashburn, Billy McCaffrey, Allan Houston and James Robinson, they have to have the players to do it. ( Cremins has brought such players as John Salley, Dennis Scott, I Mark Price, Kenny Anderson and i Travis Best to Georgia Tech. If he L can bring in that type of player to Carolina, then the Gamecocks will 1 undoubtedly be successful. ^ Bringing Cremins in soon might help the 'Cocks sign a few recruits even though it so late in the recruiti ing season. There has even been 1 some talk of several current , Georgia Tech players transferring i to South Carolina. J Lastly, Bobby is a very popular coach with his players, as evi- ] denced by comments in the media regarding their coach and, specifically, when James Forrest stuffed the net over Bobby's head and j hugged him while Bobby was beins interviewed after winnins the ' ACC tournament. The new trend in college basketball might be towards the players gaining more power in the program. It was rumored that the players' discontent with coach Lou ( Campanelli led to his firing at California. If this is indeed the ( case, then coaches are going to have to do more in terms of win- j ning the respect and admiration of their players. The administration did the right j thing in hiring Mike McGee, and ( now McGee must continue to move the program in the right direction by hiring Bobby Cremins. McGee will most likely say that his list ot candidates is longer than just Cremins alone, and this is a smart tactic. Putting all of his effort into hiring Bobby could come back to haunt him if Cremins decides to stay at Tech.
