i It's showtime!
Indiana to
The invitations have been
given out, anil tiie dance partners
have been chosen. No, we
aren't talking about some
sorority semi-formal. We are
talking about I III: Dance. The ^Al
NCAA basketball tournament.
Call it "March Madness," or SALOMC
) whatever you like ... but TONY S
ladies and gentlemen ... "Let's ?
Gel Ready to Rumble!!!"
Before we get into the details, we'd like
to talk about some of the unfortunate teams
who will be watching from the climatecontrolled
comfort of their living rooms.
How in the world does a team go 21-7
and rank in the top 25 for most of the season
not get a bid to the tournament? It's
easy if you're IJNLV. Apparently, the
University of No Legal Virtues has tried to
slip through the NCAA regulation's cracks
one too many times, and the NCAA felt it
. was time to get even. No matter, this team
* deserved a bid, and they got the shaft
instead. So. we net to see Rider University.
but noi UNLV stud J.R. Rider. Great.
Other teams whose mailboxes gathered
nothing but cobwebs on Sunday:
Minnesota, Providence and Oklahoma.
Southern University, East Carolina,
Tennessee State and Wright State? Is this
the Division II Crew Championships? For
your information, ECU is the first team
with a losing record (13-16) since... anyone?...
Montana Slate in 1986 to make the
) tournament. Don't expect many of these
teams to do much besides rack up on frequent
flyer miles.
There are always a few surprises in the
tourney, however. Who could the
Richmond Spiders of 1993 be? Well.
Coppin State HAS won 16 games in a row
coining into the "dance." The bad news is
they play Cincinnati. Ball State always is
competition for someone (Sweet 16 in
1991).... They play Kansas. Then there
are always the teams that play against such
no-brain teams such as Arizona, Florida
) State and Illinois .... Santa Clara,
Evansville and Long Beach State are those
respective teams.
OK, so let's take apart the tournament
Region-by-Region, shall we?
Starting in the Southeast, Kentucky,
Wake Forest, Seton Hall and Iowa should
escape the first round without much trouble.
The possible shocker in that bracket

Going West now. At least Coastal
Carolina can get to see Chris Webber up 4
close and personal AND come home with a C
nice Coppertone tan. In one of the tougher
regions to call, you've got Iowa J
State/UCLA and Temple/Missouri in the
opening round. Georgia Tech (coming in
red hot), Vanderbilt and Arizona will
advance along with Michigan at least lor
one day. Southern U. and Boise State
(who?) get an extended spring break. Play
begins in Tucson on Friday; Salt Lake City
on Thursday.
Nancy Says: Michigan. Sleeper: New
Mexico.

The Least Region . .. oops, that's East,
huh? By far, this is the weakest bracket.
ECU, Holy Cross, Manhattan, Pennsylvania
and Coppin State .. . say "Goodbye!" New
Mexico State/Nebraska should provide the
closest early contest. The heavy favorites
for the Final Four are UNC (with a healthy
Derrick Phelps), Arkansas and Cincinnati.
They play in Winston-Salem on Thursday
and Syracuse on Friday.
Nancy Says: UNC. Sleeper: St. John's. ;
Tony Says: Arkansas. Sleeper: Purdue.
Finally the Midwest. Indiana, Duke and J
Kansas provide for the strongest of the I
regions. Not to mention New Orleans,
Xavier (the best first round match-up), i
Oklahoma State, Louisville, California
(winners of nine of the last 10), LSU and
BYU. Whoever wins this re it ion will be
