Germans fear leaks from Soviet ships HAMBURG, Germany ? The Soviet Union sank two nuclearpowered ships in the Baltic Sea, and the German government is worried about possible radioactive contamination, a news magazine reported Saturday. It was unclear whether radioactivity was leaking from the vessels, Der Spiegel said in a summary of a report in its next issue, to be released today. It said the sunken vessels were one civilian ship and one military ship. The report did not say when the vessels were sunk. The magazine gave no sources for its report, which it said was from early scanty information made available to the German government. The Soviets also disposed of contaminated reactor parts and nuclear waste in the Baltic, against all safety rules for dealing with radioactivity, Der Spiegel said. The magazine said the German government feared that radioactive contamination could enter the food chain through fish in the Baltic.
