Harlem Spiritual Ensemble To Sing At Koger
Center: The Harlem Spiritual Ensemble will present a powerful
concert of traditional Negro spirituals at the Koger Center Feb. 17.
The Harlem Spiritual Ensemble, made up of six vocalists and two
accompanists, celebrates the history, power and majesty of Negro
spirituals. The group achieves an authentic touch in its songs by
employing the dialect used by 19th century slaves, such as the
broad vowels and swallowed consonants of old-time southern
speech.
The group was founded in 1986 by ienui Francois Clemmons and
bass Louis Stewart. It has performed regularly in the United States,
Europe and Asia. The concert at the Koger Center will feature
many favorites, including "Go Down Moses" and "Go Tell It on the
Mountain."
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is one of several USC pro
grams being held in celebration of Black History Month. Tickets
are available at the Coliseum box office. They are S10 and $8 for
the public and S5 for students. To order by phone, call 777-7228.
Southern Studies To Hold Lecture: "No Hope for Them at
Home? Black South Carolinians in the 1920s" will be given in
Gambrell 151 at 3:30 p.m. Feb. 16. The lecture will be presented by
Katherine Cann, a USC Southern Studies research fellow and
Spartanburg Methodist College history professor. The event is free
and is sponsored by USC's Institute of Southern Studies and history
department. For more information, call 777-2340.
Def Leppard Receives Unexpected Publicity: Along
with radio stations across the country, a phone sex hotline in
Waterbury, Conn., was playing a song off Def Leppard's current
album, "Adrenalize." The band was surprised to learn that "I
Wanna Touch You" was being heard by thousands of viewers as
background music while phone sex was advertised across the T.V.
airwaves. The matter came to the group's attention when a concerned
fan wrote to alert the management.
