The USC-Tennessee game
Wednesday night was eollege basketball
at its best. Carolina
rebounded from their heartbreaking
overtime loss to Clemson to defeat
the Volunteers in a thriller of a
game. The 111-107 double-overtime
victory marked the first time
in USC history the Gamecocks
have played consecutive overtime
games.
Balanced scoring and quick
hands allowed the Gamecocks to
overcome the hot perimeter shooting
of UT's Lang Wiseman and
Allan Houston.
The two players accounted for
10 of Tennessee's 14 three-pointers.
Wiseman was 6 for 13 from
long range and finished with 26
points, while Houston, the
Southeastern Conference's leading
scorer, hit 4 of 10 three-pointers to
finish with 29 points.
USC was paced by Emmett Hall,
who had a career night. Hall had a
double-double with 28 points and
12 rebounds. His 28 points were a
career best. The Gamecocks placed
five other players in double figures,
including Chris Leso, who was a
blistering 9 for 12 from the floor to
finish with 18 points.
A late seven-point run by the
Vols gave them the lead 81-75 with
1:58 left in regulation. After Steve
Newton called a timeout, USC
switched to a full-court press and
made uj$ the deficit in 36 seconds.

1 Gamecocks the lead for good. USC
; stretched the lead to six on Chris
i Leso's layup and foul.
"We tried not to force anything
) (inside)," Leso said. "The suards
i would pop it in and we would kick
1 il back out. We tried to take
advantage inside," he added.
/ The lead was pushed to eight
i points before Tennessee started to
climb back. They scored four
1 straight points, and then each team
i traded foul shots and turnovers,
with USC holding a four-point
i lead. Allan Houston then swished
another big three-pointer cutting
die lead to one at 108-107, but he
fouled out on the inbounds pass,
sending Watson back to die line.
Watson missed the second shot,
but Emmett Hall was there to stick
it back in to put the finishing
touches on the Gamecock victory.
After the game, coach Newton
expressed true relief over the win.
"This was a pivotal game, a chance
to go to .500 in the league and sole
possession of fourth! We talked to
1 our team long and hard about how
^ important it was going to be to
play 40 minutes," he said.
