Pope urges Muslim,
Christian peace
PARAKOU, Benin ? Pope John
Paul II passed through two rows
of chanting horsemen in Bowing
robes Thursday to enter this
provincial city, where he told
Muslim leaders to unite with
Christians in the search for
peace.

in wuai seeineu a preview or
his expected message when he
stops in Sudan next week, where
Christians are under attack by the
Muslim fundamentalist-inspired
government, the pope urged
cooperation between the two religions.
"You allow me to evoke ... a
domain in which Christians and
Muslims can work hand in hand
? the search for peace," the
pontiff told about 100 Muslim
clerics in a meeting hall.
As the pope flew to Benin
from Rome Wednesday, he
championed the rights of
Christians in Africa.
"Our role is always to remind
leaders of Muslim countries that
Koranic law cannot be applied to
people of other religions," he
told reporters in an apparent reference
to conflict between
Sudan's government and
Christians seeking autonomy in
that country's south.

U.S., Vietnam seek
MIA's from war
BANGKOK, Thailand- U.S. officials
met with their Vietnamese
counterparts in Hanoi Thursday
to plan new efforts to resolve the
fates of 2,261 American servicemen
missing from the Vietnam
War.
The two sides have made 21
joint ground searches in Vietnam.
The most recent, last month,
completed preliminary investigations
of 135 cases in which there
was some evidence pointing to
the survival of servicemen after
their disappearances, U.S.
spokesman Lt. Col. Dave
Fredrikson, said in Bangkok.
No evidence was found to
show that any of the Americans
were still alive.
The Hanoi government hopes ]
its cooperation will bring an end ,
to the economic embargo the j
United States imposed on
Vietnam after the Communist
takeover of the south in 1975. ;
U.S. policy is not to normalize
relations widi Vietnam until a
satisfactory accounting has been
made of the missing servicemen.

By Dec. 1, 68 people had died
of AIDS in South Carolina in
1992, compared with 201 in
1991, according to the
Department of Health and
Environmental Control
However, the department still
is compiling December figures
and may not have all the death
records for 1992 available until
May, spokeswoman Jan Tuten
said today.
AIDS deaths have been going
down since 1989, when a record
294 people died, DHEC said.
"I'm clear as a bell that the
reason those numbers have
dropped is because there are
more options now," said Bill

horse and have a queen."
Towards the end of the night's
debate, Sen. Christian Adams was
critical of Myerson's bill.
"The ambassador idea would
turn a great tradition into a politically
correct freak show," he said.
Because both bills were voted
down, there will be no changes in
Homecoming recognition. The
1991 decision of the Homecoming
commission not to have a queen
will stand.
