Gamecocks fall t
By ANDREW BORGERT
Staff Writer
The South Carolina men's basketball
team found out firsthand
who the best team in the SEC is
Saturday, as they were thoroughly
trounced by the Kentucky Wildcats
108-82.
The key to the Wildcats success
was their tenacious full- court
press. Their constant pressure led
to 22 turnovers by the Gamecocks.
Coach Steve Newton said,
"Their press was as effective as
any we've seen all season."
Terry Bynum was quick to
agree. "They send two or three
guys at you, and that makes it hard
to see the floor," he said.
Kentucky came into the game
with the reputation for shooting the
three-pointer, but, against Carolina,
it was their interior play that made
the difference. Centers Rodney
Dent and Gimel Martinez combined
to score 33 points and rip
down 11 rebounds, and forward
Andre Riddick added six rebounds
and two blocked shots.
The play by these three took
pressure off star players Jamal
Mashburn and Rodrick Rhodes.
Mashbum came in to Saturday's
game averaging 22.7 points a
game, third in the SEC. He ended
nn with onlv 15 noints in the same.

but also had a team-high eight
rebounds and four steals. Rhodes,
one of the top freshmen in the
country, finished with 17 points
and three steals.
For Carolina, die big men were
