Coppola adaptation of the Bran:
Stoker novel, is a big, beautifu
bore.
The film's visuals are spectacular
with haunting .images constantl)
filling the screen and sticking intc
your noggin.
Unfortunately, the story is a
muddled mess, a poorly wover
pastiche of

you scratching your head by the
end of the film's 130 minutes.
"Dracula" begins in 15th century
Transylvania, where we get oui
first glimpse of the title character,
played by British actor Gary
Oldman, as he leaves his beloved
Elizabeta, played by Winona
Rvder, to go to battle.
The battle scene is brilliant as
Dracula and his men bloodily vanquish
the enemy. Unfortunately,
Elizabeta receives false news that
Dracula has died and, heartbroken,
hurls herself into a river.
Dracula is so distraught by his
wife's death that he turns against
God and vows to defy death.
Inexplicably, this comes to pass
and, without any rational explanation,
Dracula becomes the wicked
creature of the night we all know
and loathe.
The film then fast-forwards to
tne ivtn century, wnere we
encounter an English law clerk
named Johnathan Harker (Keanu
Reeves) who has been assigned to

off blood and still pines for his

dence, Harker's fiancee is the spitting
image of Elizabeta, and, once

Meanwhile, Harker is locked in
the castle with three amorous

a The story just gets more and
more confusing from this point
? with countless scenes thrown in
that do not make any sense at all.
; Dracula inexplicably becomes
younger on his voyage to England,
' woos the girl who is, more than
likely, a reincarnation of his wife
and turns her rich friend Lucy into
a member of the living dead.
1 The latter plot twist brings in the
t very talented Anthony Hopkins as
doctor and part-time vampire killer,
Abraham von Helsing. von
Helsing's eccentric habits and matter-of-fact
delivery are high points
of the film, but even he cannot
make the film's events any more
logical with his frequent explanations.
While Hopkins' acting is exemplary,
many of the other actors,
even Oldman, are ineffective. In
what could have been the role of
his career, Oldman is merely so-so
because he is hindered by the tons
of latex he is forced to wear during
many scenes and by his
Transylvanian dialect, which often
makes his dialogue unintelligible.

Winona Ryder and Gary Oldma
Francis Ford Coppola's versior
portrayal in general is that the film
wants to make him both evil and
sympathetic.
It tries to have it both ways,
making him a bloodthirsty beast in
one scene and a lovesick anti-hero
in the next, and this can leave
some confused on how to view his
overall character.
Other performances, such as
Ryder's and Reeves', are weak and
lack distinction. Reeves delivers all
his lines with his usual, laid-back
"surfer-style" while Ryder simply

lacks the zip and charisma her pivotal
character requires.
With conrising and marginal
performances, the only real high- 1
lights of "Dracula" are its visuals.
The colors are sharp, the camera '
angles are dizzying and the scenery
is out-of-this-world, but, alas, a
movie that looks great is not necessarily
a great movie.
In the case of "Dracula," the
visuals save the movie from sucker.
