Five American nuns, trapped in
the heaviest siege of Liberia's 3year-old
civil war, have been shot
to death near their convent on the
outskirts of Monrovia, the capital's
Roman Catholic archbishop said on
Saturday. Four Liberian novices
were also reported slain.
L'Osservatore Romano, the
semiofficial Vatican newspaper,
reported the deaths of the novices,
but there was no further information
about them from Liberia.
The nine slayings were by far
the worst atrocity involving mis
sionanes in a war mat nas lert tens
of thousands of civilians dead and
has virtually destroyed the economy
and all semblance of normal
life in the West African nation of
2.6 million people.
From Washington to the Vatican,
outrage was expressed over the
killings, focusing international
attention on a little-understood war.
Salvadorans remain
SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador
? On the date that El Salvador
was to conclude the cease-fire to
its civil war, the core of the country's
guerrilla army remained intact
Saturday, and the government continued
to oppose any reduction in
its own forces.
In the countryside, both sides
lurched forward in effecting the
peace agreements signed in
January. As the third of five contingents
of rebel soldiers turned in
its weapons Friday and Saturday,
the government began handing out
farmland to former combatants.
In the capital, however, senior
U.N. officials were scrambling in a
second day of meetings with the
two sides to avert a breakdown in
the peace plan. The agreement was
a result of long and difficult negoMONDAY

she said in the Nov. 9 issue of

O'Connor pointed to the Dylan

"What occurred to me in those

Mockery of values
SUMTER ? Sumter County
Democrats say Republicans are
making a mockery of family values
by distributing a Penthouse magazine
article about a woman who
says she had an affair with presidential
candidate Bill Clinton.
Gennifer Flowers tells a sexually
explicit story of the alleged affair
in the December issue of Penthouse
magazine.
Walter "Sonny" Newman, chairman
of the Sumter County
Democratic Party, called the article
"sleaze."
"The Republicans have been
stressing family values and telling
people that the Democrats don't
support family values," Newman
said. "But we think their actions
are speaking a lot louder than their
words. The national Republican
Party tactics have not changed
since 1988. They made an issue out
of Willie Horton then, and they're
making an issue out of Gennifer
Flowers now."

Clinton advertised a detailed
economic recovery plan that was
snapped up by worried voters in
that depressed state.
But just as they were warming to
Clinton's plans and personality, the
discourse lurched from economics
to the so-called character issue.

the doubts about Clinton and perhaps
aided by independent Ross
Perot's single-minded deficitreduction
platform, voters refused
to be diverted from their economic
concerns.
That more than anything enabled
Clinton to survive, so tar, attacks
on his character. At one critical
juncture after another, he returned
to the economic plan he began
with.
"Nothing has bothered the *
American people more than the '
economy," said presidential historian
Henry Graff of Columbia

He said the paper is not associated

be associated with a state institution."
The monthly newspaper is
