Well, it's about time. P
For the past nine games, USC fans have been yearning for a
small gift from the football team. A victory.
We would like to congratulate the football team for their mighty ^
effort in upsetting one of the nation's toughest defensive teams in >
the Mississippi State Bulldogs. /
The odds were against you. The media was against you. And
frankly, the fans were against you.
Despite the setbacks, you won. And because of that, we would
like to give thanks to a focused football team and a coach who J*
decided to live dangerously. ^
Yes, you have finally delivered. &
USC fans and the players should take time this week to bask in ^
the limelight and forget the past problems the football team has
endured. It is time to be proud of many things:
The Gamecocks whipped the 15th-ranked team in the country. A

A freshman quarterback became a leader.

Instead, they should be thankful someone

The information does not only pertain to
females. Although females are generally rape
victims, males can also be victims.
Everyone needs to be familiar with the subject
of rape. If properly informed, USC students
may be able to decrease the number of campus
rape cases each year.
If not to protect yourself, at least become
aware so you can protect a friend or a family
member.
Read the fliers given to you. Campus Rape
Awareness meets at 6 p.m. every Tuesday in
Russell House, room 304. New members, male
or female, are always welcome.
There is no guarantee you will not be raped,
but you can better your chances of not becoming
a victim. 1

Something is wrong here. Terribly wrong.
1 What needs to be done with rape is a process
of establishing degrees to the crime. In most
states, murder is based on a first-, second-, and
third-degree system. First- degree is premeditatJ
ed; second-degree is "a crime of passion";
third- degree is accidental. Next punishments
are set according to each degree.
Maybe we should classify rape into different
categories to make it easier to prosecute. Right
now, consent is the only defense for rapists. By
classifying rape, it would increase prosecutions
and put more of these sickos behind bars.
I'm not sure how it can be classified, but I
have a snoopsfinn as to how it misht be. First
degree rape would be a sexual assualt coerced
by violent force, such as by knifepoint. Seconddeoree
rane would be a sexual assault that is

by persuasion, such as "date rape." I'm
not sure if there is a need for a third-degree
rape, because I think rape is too serious a crime
to warrant a lesser charge.
Rape is a heinous crime, and it deserves
severe punishment. Forget fines and community
service. Rape warrants either the death penalty
or castration.
Only by making examples of rapists will we
be able to deter rape.
