Warlord takes troops
Somalia ? A spokesman for
Somalia's main warlord said
Thursday he does not object to the
United States deploying 2,400
Marines to provide support for
U.N. troops being dispatched to
guard food for starving Somalis.
The Marine amphibious group
is expected to arrive within a few
days on four warships that will sit
in the Indian Ocean off Somalia's
coast.
The Marines will support U.S.
airlift operations of U.N. troops to
Mogadishu.
The 500 U.N. troops, 60 of
whom arrived earlier this week,
are to protect humanitarian aid
shipments and workers in this devastated
capital. The United States
is transporting them from
Pakistan.

On June 24, Palms stunned the

But civic leaders in Spartanburg

where campuses exist.
Palms has repeatedly said profesors
at Spartanburg and Aiken

"What we're saying is, 'You can
have academic autonomy and be

speech communications professor
at Aiken since 1974, said.
Elizabeth S. Bell, an English
professor at Aiken for 14 years,
said the system should remain
intact.
"Financially, the state of South
Carolina needs us to stay together,"
she said. "They don't support higher
education as it is now. It would
be even more costly if we were
independent."
Bell said she's been particularly
troubled by Palms' statements that
he's consulted with professors at
campuses in Aiken and
Spartanburg.
"I'm a little skeptical of what he
has in mind," Bell said. "I haven't
found anyone he's talked to on this
campus."
Palms said Tuesday he would be
visiting Aiken in the next several
weeks to talk with professors as a
group.
