NFL week
By MARK NEWGENT
Staff Writer t
I wish I could send out a high- 1
light film for this weeks' column. \
Week two of the NFL season has
enough highlights to fill a one-hour (
special.
Hail to the Redskins! They're J
back, and they're bad. The 'Skins
knocked off Atlanta 24-17 with 1
tenacious down-the-stretch defense. J
Kurt Gouveia's interception with
3:41 left in the fourth quarter
sealed the win for Washington. The 1
highlights of the game belonged to 1
Desmond Howard and Deion
Sanders.
Howard, who scored on a razzle- '
uazzic puni lcium, icccivcu a uncial
from Brian Mitchell and then '
dashed down the sideline to score
his first professional touchdown.
Who says the 'Skins don't need
him? Prime Time got his highlight (
by taking the ensuing kickoff 99 i
yards for the touchdown. <

The Bills and 49ers match was
everything it was hyped to be. In
he end, the Bills wound up on top,
edging out San Francisco 34-31.
This game was a whirling dervish
)f offensive power. The Bills came
)ack from an 11 point halftiine
leficit on the strength of Thurman
rhomas' running and Jim Kelly's
massing. Buffalo out-scored San
Francisco 21-7 in the second half,
rhe 49ers failed to tie the game
when Mike Cofer missed a 47-yard
field goal attempt with one minute
remaining.
The Dallas Cowboys survived a
second half comeback by the N.Y.
Oiants to win 34-28. The Cowboys,
jp 27-0 at the half, were outscored
28-7 in the second half. But the
Oiants couldn't pull it out. New
York was forced to punt with two
minutes left to play.
Other games of note: New
Orleans decked Chicago 28-6. The
Bears lost a heartbreaker to New
Orleans in the preseason.

Minnesota stopped Barry Sanders
and held the the Lion offense to
only 10 points, but the Detroit
defense and special teams combined
for three touchdowns to beat
the Vikines 31-17. Here's a sur
c?
prise: Tampa Bay is 2-0. They
routed Green Bay 31-3. Vinnie
Testaverde was 22 of 25 passing
for 363 yards.
Next weeks' big matches include
a battle of two of the games' most
exciting quarterbacks. When John
Elway and the Broncos take on
Randall Cunningham and the stifling
Philadelphia Eagle defense,
look for the Eagle defense to be the
key factor in the game.
Superpowers collide when
Kansas City comes to the House of
Pain to take on Houston. If
Pittsburgh can win there, look for
the Chiefs to run wild. The battle
for second place in the NFC West
begins when New Orleans plays
Atlanta.

This past weekend USC was '
embarrassed by Arkansas in
Williams-Brice Stadium. Since !
Saturday's game, there has been an '
increase of complaints about *
Sparky Woods and his coaching. <
Before there's a riot here in

Many of my friends said Sparky
ihould have been fired by Monday,
and there was even talk of boy:otting
the rest of USC's football
games until Woods i? gone.
I felt similar opinions in my own
head. The one consistent thread in
all of the talk was "Get rid of
Sparky."
As USC students, we have every
right to criticize-the team's play

have with all of the complaining is
that we don't support the team a
whole lot.
I'm not saying partying and
socializing isn't part of the whole
football tradition, but I get the

actual game as the centerpiece of
Saturday afternoons.
I would be a hypocrite if I said I
wasn't guilty of the same crime as
the rest of the students. We need to
show our team more support. The
hallmark of all SEC teams is
tremendous fan support.
If we are ever expected to be
seen as an equal to Florida,
Alabama or Georgia, there must be
more fan involvement. Better fan
involvement improves player performance,
recruiting and public
opinion.
Gamecock fans, don't stop complaining
about team performance.
That's your right. There is nothing
wrong with expecting a competitive
football team. Just make sure you
also show some support. Otherwise
we are in for a long season.
