Local band gi By SEAN McGUINNESS t Staff Writer ? s On a hot, dusty, desert road two sunbaked e individuals desperately fumble to repair a t broken axle on the trailer containing the I equipment for the band. s Finally the heat drives the duo insane and further progress is put on hold as they vent t their aggression. The axle does get repaired, i however, and drummer Darrin Gray and \ vocalist Cole Charles catch up with the oth- f er half of the group. n They meet up with guitarist Chad Conn and bassist Alan Mozingo in Phoenix, Ariz., f to discover that the club doesn't have them on the list. Fortunately, the group limps its 1< way to Flagstaff to play their best and most c successful performances ever. A candidate for Amazing Stories? No, F just another trial of life for the Columbia- s< based band 49 Reasons. 1 49 Reasons has traveled all over the coun- v try to states like New Jersey, Illinois, New n Mexico, and a mammoth trip to California. The farther from home they go, the easier it b is to get booked for a show. But they never tl forget their roots. v "We like Columbia. Columbia is the band's favorite mu< cene, and they hope to see bands from 01 :r areas tour in the South to combat the he ic schedule of the big cities. According )arrin, more places to perform would pi ent a unified music scene. Charles and Gray met in 1986 and form he nucleus of 49 Reasons. After two yej hey replaced their bass and guitar playt vith Mozingo and Conn. The group mov rom Florence to Columbia for a perfc native in a waicuuusc wiui rvmuicu OUUi. Their sound today is radically differe rom the founding days. "We make an attempt to be melodic...wi ats of backing vocals. We're more guil dented now," Gray said. "All the money we re- make goes right into the band." In November they plan to go on a southed western tour to Georgia, Alabama, Texas, irs Mississippi, and the like. There are also ^rs plans to have another single out before then, ed Gray sees the future of music, specifically >r- alternative music, opening up. "So much has already been done," :nt Charles said. "There is a lot of room for new ideas, but you've got to look much ith harder. You get off on something you've tar written but realize that it's the same thing someone else did. Then you have to drop it he and move on." ns Most of all, the band members try to ic. enjoy themselves while performing their rd music. ig "I see people taking music way too seriously. This is never a job to us. You go out ;s, there to listen to music and have a good to time; it should never be a philosophical stohe ry," Charles said. 49 Reasons will be playing at n, Rockafella's Sept. 11 at 10 p.m. gME * k* f h c * i iw^ f ^ '$100?? off Studios only, while available DCENT I t T Me EVENT FOREST FIRES.
