4 Hashing

Combine cross-country running,
fox hunting, and tailgating and
you have the sport of Hashing.
Hashing is played by a group of
15-20 people every other Sunday
here in Columbia. TTie group is led
by Vernon Bowen, the Grand
Master of the Columbia Hash
House Harriers.
Bowen said Hashing is a version
of an English game called Hares
and Hounds. An Australian officer
named A.S. Gispert started the
game of Hashing in 1938 while staIntramurals

One of the best ways to spend
your free time this fall is participating
in intramural sports. Last
year USC sponsored more than 110
intramural teams and with more
than a 1,000 students participating.
There are 32 intramural sports to
choose from, ranging from innertube
water polo to basketball.
Teams compete all semester to find
the top team of each sport at each
level.

much on the weekends at a local
pub. Later, he and his fellow officers
would go running in the public
park to sweat off what they drank.
The run finished at a pub called the
Hash House where the officers
would drink back what they sweat
off.
The officers eventually became
bored with their run through the
park. But then the owner of the
Hash House started following them
on their run with a truck full of
beer.
The current game starts with two

"Everyone is encouraged to
come out and participate regardless
of skill. We have A levels for
advanced players, B levels for
intermediate players, and C levels
for beginners. Almost 75 percent
of the players at USC participate in
B level competition," Camp said.
Many students who participate
in intramural competition are sponsored
by fraternities, sororities, or
residence halls. Students also often
get groups of their friends together
and form their own teams.
"It's not necessary to be sponsored
by a club to compete. New
students are often placed on teams
by the intramural office on teams,"
Camp said.
