This past Thursday was a real hot one, considering
the 100 degree temperatures Columbia
has experienced lately.
However, things got even hotter at the Township
that night as Melissa Etheridge and her
( rockin' crew hit the stage. Etheridge fans were
' enthralled with her voice and guitar playin' the
whole evening.
Newcomer Jeffrey Gaines opened the show
with his original brand of vocals and acoustic
guitar. His powerful voice mesmerized the audience
as he sung about love, fear and many other
things that seem to overwhelm the human
psyche.
In one song, he spoke of the need to dream
and try things which haven't been explored.
And why? Because it's hard to think of what
could have or could not have been when no effort
is being put forth to accomplish a goal,

which is some noteworthy advice for all s
listeners.
Gaines' music was intriguing enough to pull
listeners in and keep them listening. After each a
song, he was given a handsome round of applause.
Near the end of his performance , he 1
modestly quipped, "Thanks for listening." t
Jeffrey, you were worth listening to. c
As for the headliner act, Gaines said the au- \
dience was in for a real treat. He was right. <
Etheridge was welcomed onto the stage with
thunderous applause and excitement from the s
crowd. She channeled that energy into her per- t
formance in the best ways possible. s
The audience witnessed her jam periodically
with members of her crew, especially her bass i
guitarist, Kevin McCormick. In one song, the s

;ession that literally rocked the house.
If Chuck Berry had joined the crew with his
'chicken walk", it would have been hard to say
vho would have been the loser.
Etheridge's rough, yet strong singing style
cept the crowd captivated all night. Even near
he end of her show when she said goodbye to a
dinging audience before leaving the show, she
vas wooed back on before the lights broke for
>ne last song.
It was a slow song - the only song in which
;he played a piano. It was the right kind of song
o close the show instead of the long, hard jam'
;ession that she had ended the prior song with.
The Columbia crowd definitely got their moley's
worth after seeing someone who really
;ounds great live come and entertain them with
ome harmonized singing and playing.

Ippolito is the center's sole employee.
She is aided by as many as

from coordinating workshop events
to stuffing envelopes.

is growing rapidly.
