Cromers head
to the majors
From Staff Reports
The Gamecock baseball team,
fresh off of an NCAA Regional
appearance, will lose three of its
top players.
Senior Burke and junior D.T.
Cromer, along with younger
brother and top USC recruit Brandon
Cromer will all head for the
professional baseball ranks rather
than playing for the Gamecocks.
Burke, a third baseman at USC,
signed with the Atlanta Braves this
past week as a pitcher. He hit .292
with nine homers and 54 RBI in
1992, and made occasional appearances
as a pitcher out of the bullpen.
D.T., an outfielder, signed
Sunday with the Oakland A's after
batting .333 with seven homeruns
and 29 RBI in 1992.
Brandon, who led Lexington
High School to the state championships,
will sign with the Toronto
Blue Jays after playing in Saturday's
North-South All-Star Game.
The youngest Cromer batted .408
with five homers and 21 RBI for
the Wildcats in '92.
The 1993 baseball season will
be the first since 1987 that a
Cromer will not be in the Gamecock
lineup.

The loss of USC's top basketball
recruit because of academics
could be a "temporary setback",
according to USC basketball coach
Steve Newton.
"As we understand it," Newton
said, "there are still a couple of
options that could put Perry in our
program next year in a redshirt situation.
We're still optimistic that
Perry could be a Gamecock."
Newton is referrring to 6-foot-9
Percy Eberhart, the Gamecocks'
top recruit from Clarke Centrtal
High School in Athens, Ga. Eberhart
failed to graduate with his
class last Friday. Under NCAA
rules, Eberhart "needed to graduate
with his class to be eligible to play
basketball as a freshman. According
to Newton, he must now enroll
in summer school to receive his
diploma.
"He will graduate high school
after summer school," Newton
said. "But there are still a number

Meanwhile, Europe is gearing
up for the biggest soccer event
next to the World Cup. The

Thirty-three European nations
began the tournament in 1990

France, Yugoslavia, England, the

For those eight nations, this
will be a prime opportunity to
tune up for World Cup '94 in the
good ol' USA. The Netherlands
are probably the favorite, boasting

There is a possibility that Eberhart
wuill not be able to enroll in
USC for the fall. If Eberhart obtains
his high school diploma over
the summer and scores at least a

Test, he can enroll under the

Though Newton said he was upset
about Eberhart, the remaining
six recruits leave the Gamecocks
in good shape in Newton's quest
to rebuild the basketball program.
"We are a little disappointed but
not discouraged with the restructuring
of our program," Newton
said. "Percy was one of seven signees.
We think we have a solid
