To the editor:
Through the course of my studies in
public health, I have become increasingly
aware of the situation of Human
Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and
AIDS in our society. I write this letter
out of concern for the student, staff and
faculty of USC, especially the women.
According to the Centers for Disease
Control (CDC), "... Many women in
the U.S. are unaware that they are at
risk for HIV infection, and HIV infected
women often remain undiagnosed
until the onset of AIDS or until a
perinatally infected child (that is, a
child infected in the womb by an HIV+
mother) becomes ill." AIDS is estimated
to be the fifth leading cause of
death for women age 15 to 44 in the
United States.

reported AIDS cases in adult/
adolescent women totaled 5,730 in the
United States. This number is approximately
equal to the size of 204 average
classes here at USC.
Thirty-seven percent, or 2,119, of
these cases are reported to be transmitted
through man to woman sexual contact
Of these 2,119 cases, 446 did not
report having sex with an injecting
drug user, a bisexual male, a hemophiliac,
a man who has received infected
blood or blood products, nor a man
who is a resident of a country in which
man to woman sex is the predominant
mode of transmission.
Not well: these numbers reflect only
reported AIDS cases and DO NOT include
those women infected with HIV
who have not yet developed AIDS.
Therefore, these numbers are probably
underestimates of actual AIDS cases,
