in favor of cigarette advertising in the

earlier this month demanded that R.J.
Reynolds Tobacco Co., voluntarily
yank the 'spokesperson' (Old Joe, in
the Camel advertising campaign) from
all advertising and promotions for
Camel cigarettes. It comes three
months after the Journal of the American
Medical Association published several
studies claiming Old Joe encourages
children to smoke. These studies
were scrutinized by a bigger than usual
set of panelists of the Journal (which
has a 90 percent rate of rejection for

18 years old.
Even a 7-year-old kid remembered
the advertisement with Old Joe. So you
think a kid that age should be considered
responsible, and largely answerable
to her/his actions? Next, you point
the finger at parents. The point however,
is that the Old Joe campaign is
being widely criticized (for targeting
children) by the media, health professionals
and a government agency.
While Dr. Novello cannot forcibly
make R.J. Reynolds stop its Old Joe
campaign, it is noteworthy that for the
first time such a consensus has
emerged against a cigarette campaign.
It is a complex situation, one without
a simplistic explanation. Your didatic

and individuals, is rather misplaced.

Do you remember the name Bobbi Rossi? She
i was a USC student who was raped and murdered on
s our campus in the early 1980s.
; How about Judy Stringer? A prominent Columbia
businesswoman who survived a rape "just a stone's
throw away" from our campus five years ago.
; Just last month a USC student was raped by two
students in Preston Hall. The unofficial survey of
600 women conducted by Omicron Delta Kappa indicates
that over 100 of them are Slirvivnrc r?f cpviiq!

assault at USC.
Despite this, the university has failed to fulfill the
obvious need for a complete sexual assault policy
and procedure. In fact, Vice President of Law Enforcement
and Safety Carl Stokes doubts that rape is a
serious problem on campus, according to an article
in The State.
He is right. It is not a "serious" problem, rape is a
devastating problem.
The ODK Forum entitled "Campus Rape: A University
Responsibility?" was originally intended to
educate faculty, students, and staff on the role of the
university with regard to this issue. What resulted
was a different kind of education.
Frustrated victims came forward and divulged
^ their accounts of re-victimization by the student
health center, the police department and the judicial
system of USC. The audience became enraged as
they realized the injustice rape victims at USC must
face when they report the incidents.
After Tuesday night, the university is finally responding
to a problem that has been ignored for too
long.
i In just 48 hours, the university has undergone a
metamorphosis. USC President John Palms has initiated
a task force to end the negligence and combat
this crime at USC. We hope that this is a pro-active
; step and that the university is sincerely concerned
1 and has accepted its responsibility to students.
; All too often, initial ideas and intentions look
L good on paper, but never materialize. We cannot let
i this happen. Now that the university has recognized
; the problem and is willing to do something about it,
let's join their efforts and assure victims of sexual
assault are treated with dignity and offenders are
: properly punished.
? We know that nothing happens when students are
silent. A few students have raised their voices with
courage and initiated change. Initiating the change is
the first step. Now there must be action. March to
the Division or Student Airairs otiice and let them
hear your voice.
