A $15 million National Science
Foundation grant will go to the
Gateway Coalition of 10 universities,
of which the USC College of
Engineering is one, to improve engineering
education.
The five-year grant will receive
matching funds from each university
and their industrial partners.
USC has commitments from IBM
and NCR to participate in projects,
and faculty are developing proposals
involving other companies.
"USC's invitation to join the
Gateway Coalition and to share
this $15 million grant speaks well
of the initiative and the work that
our engineering faculty have exhibited
in improving our undergraduate
program," W. Kenneth Humphries,
dean of the College of Engineering,
said.
'There are several things to accomplish
as a coalition member.
But foremost, we want to make engineering
more interesting and
meaningful for students," Humphries
said. "This will result in
