Gorbachev's Movie Debut ? With An Angel: Mikhail
Gorbachev chats with an angel in his movie debut. The tabloid
newspaper Bild reported Saturday that German director Wim Wenders
filmed the Gorbachev scene earlier this month in Munich,
when the former Soviet leader visited the Bavarian capital.
In the scene, Gorbachev is sitting at a desk when "suddenly an
angel appears to him. They talk about the meaning of life," the
newspaper said. In a reflective tone, Gorbachev tells the angel,
"You can't build a world on bloodshed. When we humans and you
politicians, actors, artists, workers, men, women and representatives
of all religions are united, we'll be able to solve all problems
and issues."
The movie will be a continuation of "Wings of Desire," Bild
said. In that Wenders' film, an angel overlooking Berlin talis in
love with a trapeze artist and longs to return to earth. Bild didn't
say what the new movie will be called or when it will be released.
USC Group Inducted Into Rifling Society: On March
20, USC's chapter of the National Society of Pershing Rifles was
officially inducted into the society. The ceremony took place at the
society's regimental assembly at Clemson University and is the
chapter's last step in becoming a recognized organization on the
USC campus.
The USC chapter of the society received numerous awards, including
individual honors for Jermaine E. Whiteside. Whiteside
and James Michael Lee established the organizaton at USC.
The National Society of Pershing Rifles was founded in 1894 by
Gen. John J. Pershing to assist young men with aspirations of becoming
military officers. Since then, it has become a very diversified
fraternal organization with members with a wide variety of
career goals. The organization is not strictly military.
The charter members of the USC chapter, Taylor Bowman and
Henry Meyers Jr., were inducted into the society March 5.

Columbia is not exactly a haven for the
avid ice hockey player.
Students who pine away for the gliding
frenzy of freedom and the comradery of
clashing competition need yearn no longer.
Roller hockey is the latest game, and a team
of dedicated enthusiasts are showing Columbia
there is more to hockey than meets the
ice.
Roller hockey, a game already popular in
the north, is a new sport to Columbia. Several
players asked the Division of Student
Affairs for permission to create a new recreational
organization, and their efforts culmi
naiea in. ine naming 01 roller nocicey as an
official university club sport.
The sport is a year-round game similar to
traditional ice hockey, but players use in-line
skates (roller blades) and can play on any
flat surface.
"I played at my undergraduate institution
where we were lucky to have four guys
show up for a game," Rob Abowitz, club
president and a student personnel services
major, said. "It was a great surprise to see so
much interest here in South Carolina."
The club has 25 members, ranging from
freshmen to graduates. The team meets at 4
p.m. on weekdays and at noon on weekends
to play scrimmages.
The club's leaders hope to contact two
other roller hockey units, in Charleston and
Hilton Head, but suspect differences in regional
playing styles, given the developing nature
of the sport, might make a match

"I can understand why in-line skating has
become such a novelty," Abowitz said. "It
works nicely with the health craze, offering
an exciting, year-round activity that is much
more enjoyable and better for your knees
than running."
Some players said it is often difficult for
people to get started in roller hockey because
most players have a background interest in
the traditional sport and start-up costs are
fairly substantial. Most in-line skates cost at
least $100. Players bring their own sticks
and skates to scrimmages.

is," Abowitz said of the sport. "Roller
hockey is very high-profile, and we encourage
a lot of on-lookers to see what it's all
about."
In Columbia, where the only ice skating
rink is a small one in a private country club,
rollerblading has become a long-awaited
alternative.
Last Thursday, the rollor hockey club rented
Red Wing Roller Rink to play its first
indoor match. Publicizing the event at rol- |
lerblade rental locations, the club promoted the
evening as a community-wide
scrimmage. '
Community participants range from professionals
to high school students, like bu- '
sinessman Ed Schuler, accountant Chip Stury '
and Irmo High School student Ryan George.
"Rollerblading has the possibility of fad- '
ing away like hula hoops and yo-yos," Abo- 1
witz said. "Roller hockey is not going to become
another basketball, but we can enjoy it 1
as a growing sport."

Major Dad
Star to host golf tourney,
bring wife Delta Burke
-rom Staff Reports
Television star Gerald McRaney, who portrays a
U.S. Marine Corps officer on the situation comedy
'Major Dad," will be in Columbia April 4 to host a
golf tournament sponsored by the Carolina Navy
Alumni Association.
McRaney will be host of the First Annual Celebrity
3olf Tournament and may be accompanied by other
members of the "Major Dad" cast and his wife, Delta
Burke, according to Thomas Pollard, president of the
Carolina Navy Alumni Association.
In "Major Dad" McRaney portrays a traditional
Marine Corps officer who marries a liberal-minded
newspaper reporter (Shanna Reed) with three young
laughters. This role represents a total departure from
Rick Simon, the irrepressible half of the private investigating
team of "Simon & Simon," the comedyidventure
series in which McRaney starred for eight
years.
"The purpose of the golf tournament is to raise money
to provide scholarships to highly qualified young
men and women who are seeking a commission in the
U.S. Navy or Marine Corps," Pollard said. "Without
this fundraiser and the support of the community,
many well-deserving Naval ROTC students would be
unable to continue with their education."
The Golf Tournament will be held at Fort Jackson
3olf Club on April 4 with a shotgun start at noon.
me tournament will be toiiowea by a banquet at
p.m. at Fort Jackson's NCO Club with awards and entertainment
with Gerald McRaney beginning at 6:30
p.m.
Interested players or sponsors of a team should contact
the Carolina Navy Alumni Association at
