Nominees for the 64th annual
Academy Awards will face some
of the toughest competition in re;ent
Oscar history.
For Best Actress, if there is anv
justice, Susan Sarandon and Geena
Davis will tie for "Thelina and
Louise." "For the Boys" star Bette
Midler got a sentimental nomination
but she will not win, nor will
Laura Dern in a far-better film,
"Rambling Rose." Jodie Foster has
a good chance if Davis and Sarandon
cancel each other out. As the
lead in "Silence of the Lambs,"
she stood face-to-face with twisted
psychopath Hannibal Lecter and
had the audience cheering for her.
Foster's acclaimed directorial debut,
"Little Man Tale," reaffirmed

Robin Williams received his
third Best Actor nomination, this
lime for "The Fisher King," but,
alas, poor Mr. Williams is always
a nominee, never a winner. Robert
De Niro of "Cape Fear" displayed
rage and anger better than anyone
else can, and Warren Beatty's
fresh turn in "Bugsy" may have an
outside chance; but the contest is
between Nick Nolle in "Prince of
Tides" and Anthony Hopkins in
"Silence of the Lambs." Nolle
moved audiences as he came to
terms with his troubled past, and
Hopkins terrified viewers with a
character whose impact has lingered
almost a year after the film's
release.
For Best Supporting Actress,
Kale Nclligan in "Prince of Tides"
became a symbol of how Southern
culture made the main character
repress childhood memories; and
"Cape Fear" actor Juliette Lewis
depicted the innocence of childhood
versus evil personified. Mercedes
Ruchl, who emerged in the
male-dominated "Fisher King," has
