The Gamecock men's basketball
team, struggling along in the midst
of a nine-game losing streak,
travels to Lexington tonight for a
battle with the Kentucky Wildcats.
The Wildcats, winners of five
consecutive games, are ranked
11th in the nation by the Associated
Press. They sport a 20-5 record
overall, and lead the Southeastern
Conference Eastern Division
with a 9-3 record. The
Wildcats are 13-2 at Rupp Arena,
and in five attempts the Game
cocks have never come out of Lexington
with a victory.
If the Gamecocks are to stop
their Rupp Arena hex, they will
have to control sophomore forward
Jamal Mashburn, who ranks in the
top 10 in the SEC in six different
categories. His 20.9 points per
game ranks third and his 7.2 rebounds

in five games against SEC

The Gamecocks do, however,
have one of the premier defenses
in the nation. They hold their opponents
to just 39.4 percent shooting

sixth in the nation.
Kentucky and South Carolina
have already played each other
once this year, a 80-63 Wildcat
victory here in Columbia. The vie
tory ruined the Gamecocks' SEC
debut. In that contest, Mashburn
exploded for a career-high 33

The game is scheduled for an 8
