Some applicants look
for ouside assistance
By The Associated Press
The desperate trek to find money to pay f<
college can lead parents and their children
businesses charging for services that librarii
and school financial aid offices offer for free.
"The bottom line is money," said Carol)
Donges, who provides technical assistance
South Carolina's high school counselors.
"They target low income families that th<
know will qualify for some things. They g
them to sipn a naner. and then thev have
cough up some money, and they don't kno
what they're getting into," she said.
Several scholarship matching services or 1
nancial aid search services have popped up a
over the state, Donges said. The downturn
the economy has forced more students to pour
the pavement looking for dollars.
"Right now middle class parents are real
looking for scholarships because they dor
qualify for grants based on need," Donges saic

students still have to do some of the legwork.
"No one is going to come up to your hou
and knock on the door and ask 'Do you want
scholarship?'" she said. "You have to do son
research and some work, too."

Bob Hudson, manager of American Educa- y
tional Assistance in Columbia, said his service r'
makes the money search easier for families. 1
"It's just like an accountant or a CPA," Hudson
said. "A person chooses them because they 5
? don't want to do it themselves, and we tell them Jj
3r that. All we do is make it easier for them to
10 find the money."
es v
?AEA charges an initial fee of $599 per fam- v
m ily, with an annual renewal fee of $100 per stu- ?
to dent. With that, Hudson guarantees $4,000 to v
$7,000 of financial aid. But the form of the mojy
ney isn't specified, which means it can be loans
et that must be paid back as well as scholarships i
to and grants. s

"We find that many people don't know what 2
to do by the financial aid process," he said.

how to start. They don't know how or when or 1
in what to do."

There are several other avenues for fam
n search of college money. Many schools
;chool districts around the state are bu;
:omputer data bases that give students col
tnd financial aid information.
Counselors usually mail out packets of ir
nation and interview students one-on-on

"used students can also find a extra hand
he usual stacks of baffling forms.
If families want to do some real colleg(
lancial planning they should start early ?
;arly as elementary school.
"The suggestion from our association w<
