My Review
New touch on
'Romeo' drama
brings success
Shakespeare would have been
shocked and most likely, pleased.
In the modern production of
"Romeo and Juliet" by the USC
Department of Theatre, Speech and
Dance, Romeo wears Levi's, and
his cohorts are bedecked in combat
boots. Strangely enough, the wailing
sirens and gun-bearing guards
seem appropriately placed in the
16th century drama.
The production is not intended
to be a parody. The original text is
followed, and while most of the
added elements are amusing, their
ultimate goal is to help the audience
identify with the story.
Director Michael Joseph DonIan,
a graduate student, has deromanticized
the. drama hv emnha
sizing the tragic aspects of the
story. Donlan's said his adaptation
seeks to show that "young love is
not as perfect and as G-Rated as
we would like to imagine; it is at
best a slow and painful release of
ego."
- There is a lot going on in this
production. It is nerveracking
and powerful, beautiful
and disturbing. Reinforced is the
oddity of love, the one emotion
capable of bringing joy or wreaking
complete havoc. The play is an
antithesis to Thomas Moore's assertion
that "there is nothing so
sweet in life as love's young
dream." There is an absolute hellish
side of love we would much
rather not see.
USC's production is not only
creative and thought provoking but
also superb theatrically. The cast
members give heartfelt performances,
and the technical crew
provides a perfect atmosphere.
Their combined efforts have made
this experiment quite successful.
"Romeo and Juliet" will run
through Jan. 26 at Longstreet
Theatre. Few tickets remain. For

When people first enter the third
floor of USC's Hamilton College,
they might feel as though they've
left the campus and entered a den.
A "No Whining" sign hangs on
an office door. Just inside lies a
hodge-podge of articles with no
unifying theme. And then there are
the little plastic Halloween skulls.
Enter Dr. Ted Rathbun's office.
The 50-year-old professor
teaches a primates, peoples and
prehistory class, a forensic anthropology
class and a human osteology
class.
Peoples, primates, and prehistory
is usually a large class, permitting
little student-professor interaction,
he said.
The other class is often small
and allows more interaction between
the teacher and student, he
