release of
Board to take back
Holderman's title =
By The Associated Press "ZWhen
USC President John
Palms issues a public report next
week on his probe into the conduct
of predecessor James Holderman,
he will receive support from most ~
of the USC trustees.
Palms had begun proceedings to ~
revoke Holderman's tenured pro- ?
fessorship, but Holderman halted ,
that Friday when he resigned his
post. i
Michael Mungo, chairman of the |
USC Board of Trustees, said Holderman
suggested a deal to give up |
his tenure if USC would keep the
investigation secret Palms refused
the deal, Mungo said. d
Also, Mungo said he will ask g
the board to revoke the "distin- q
guished president emeritus" title ^
the board gave Holderman when
he resigned in May 1990.
"If he was unsuitable to be a r(
professor, then he certainly is un- v
suitable to hold the distinguished P
honor," Mungo said. a
"I think there's a general consensus
among the trustees, with the ^
exception of maybe two or three, r
that we'd love to get that title t
back," said trustee Herbert Adams v
of Laurens. r
But Trustee Louis Sossamon of *
Gaffney said th> board gave Holderman
the title cor his contribu- j
tions and he wou not favor tak- c
ing it away. c
Holderman resigned under fire f
for his lavish spending. He pleaded
guilty to receiving extra compensa- 2
tion and no contest to state tax
evasion earlier this year. r

Campbell's appointee to the USC

"The governor would support a
sport being made to the public on

roves to be the course of action,"
Campbell spokesman said.
USC Faculty Senate President

Also in the works are a comedy show and a talk C
