When South Carolina's Gamecocks
head into Kenan Memorial
Stadium Saturday to face the North
Carolina Tar Heels, one team is
playing for a bowl bid, and the
other to come one game closer to
another winning season.
The 'Heels are 5-4 and could
come away with a bid to the Peach
Bowl in Atlanta on New Years
Day, if they get by the Gamecocks
and the Duke Blue Devils the following
week.
USC is 3-4-2 and trying to stay
I above .300 for the fifth year in a
row. The last time the Gamecocks
did not post a winning record was
the 1986 campaign when USC finished
3-6-2.
To reach the positive side again,
the Gamecocks must shut down a
potent UNC offense ? and beat
Clemson the next week. But first
the Gamecocks must get by North
Carolina and tailback Natrone
Means. Means has been tearing up
defenses all season, totaling 705

Means and company are averag
ing 166.9 yards on the ground eacl
contest. The Tar Heels also scon
23.7 points each game while theii
defense is holding opponents tc
18.7 each outing, compared to 23.2
and 22.9 respectively for the
Gamecocks.
Means also leads the ACC in
rushing and is second in scoring,
and is 17th in career scoring al
UNC.
North Carolina, however, does
not put the ball in the air much. In
nine games, UNC is only averaging
only 165 yards per game, compared
to USC's 229.7. But when
freshman quarterback Jason Stanicek
does put it in the air, he is
very accurate, completing 60 percent
of his passes.
USC's passing attack, however,
may be limited. Wide receiver Eddie
Miller went down in the the
first half of this past week's loss to
Florida State with a leg injury and
is questionable for this week.

Steve Newton is probably a
happy man... for now.
USC's first-year head basketball
coach got some good news
as his first two recruits ? Kentucky's
Carlos Turner and Michigan's
Norm Greene ? signed
scholarships to attend USC.
One night earlier, Newton's
coaching debut at South Carolina
was a success as the Gamecocks
got 19 points from senior Joe
Rhett and defeated High Five
America 63-58 in an exhibiton
game at Carolina Coliseum.
Turner, a 6-5, 190-pound
guard from Lousiville's Fairdale
High, is a leading candidate for
the Mr. Basketball title in Kentucky.
This past season, Turner
averaged 16.8 points and 6.2 rebounds
per game in helping Fairdale
to its second consecutive
state title. He was also a consensus
all-state selection this past
year.
Turner was highly-recruited by
Michigan, Tennessee, Louisville
and Kentucky but instead chose
to follow his former head coach
Stan Hardin, now an assistant on
Newton's staff, to USC.
Greene, a 6-8, 190-pound senior
from Grand Haven High
School in Michigan, averaged
lb.4 points, 8.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists
and had 98 blocks in his junior
year.
USC opened its 1991-92 season
Tuesday night winning its
first exhibition game in two seasons.
The Gamecocks shot a
modest 41.9 percent from the
floor in the victory and were 60
percent from the free throw
stripe.
Seniors Jo Jo English and
Barry Manning followed Rhett in
scoring with 16 and 12 points respectively.
