The state of South Carolina will
have representation in the 1991
NCAA Soccer Tournament, but for
the first time in seven years, it
won't be from the Gamecocks.
USC, 14-5, missed out on its
seventh consecutive trip to the
tournament when they did not receive
a bid Monday afternoon. But
two other state schools, Clemson
and Furman will be participating.
The Gamecocks played against
seven of the teams who made the
tournament, defeating tourney participants
San Francisco and Evansville
and losing to NCAA-bound
Wake Forest, Rutgers, North Carolina
and Furman. Adelphi, a Met
Life Classic participant, also made
the field.
The Tigers, 13-5-2, will be making
their 16th trip to the NCAAs,
but only their second since 1987,
when they won the national
championship. Clemson downed
the Gamecocks 6-0 two weeks ago
in a crucial South Region game.
They will travel to Raleigh Sunday
to face 11-4-2 N.C. State at 1 p.m.

The South Carolina men's tennis
team closed out their fall campaign
by participating in two tournaments
this weekend.
Five Gamecocks, PJ. Langone,
Dirk Hahneiser, Mark Palus, Johan
Wiig, and Jimmy Panagopoulos,
qualified to compete in the ITCA
Rolex South Atlantic Region in
Winston Salem, N.C.
Meanwhile, Jon Reeves, Alex
Schad, and Jose Frontera traveled
to Gainesville, Fla., to participate
in the Barnett Bank Fall
Invitational.

Regional qualifies for a berth in
the ITCA National to be held in

Jimmp Panagopoulos was the most
successful Gamecock, posting the
biggest win of his young career
with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over
North Carolina's Woody Webb.
Webb, college tennis' 26th
ranked player in the latest Volvo

second seed behind Tar
Heel teammate Roland Thronqvist.

frankly, if I were a betting man,
the odds would not be in our
favor.

Washington is 10-0, but let
me say it right now, they will not
go undefeated. Either the Cowboys,
Giants or Eagles will beat
them (but not all three). My prediction:
the Redskins will go 15-1
or 14-2 and win the Super Bowl
handily (unless they play the
Oilers).
As for the also-rans, the NFC
East and the AFC West should
dominate the playoffs. I figure the
Skins, Cowboys and Eagles (and
maybe the Giants) will all represent
the NFC East in the postseason.
The Chiefs, Broncos and
Raiders will join the AFC Championship
hunt. Each conference's
Super Bowl representative will
more than likely come from these
two divisions as well.
This brings me to a trend I
still have .
mean, now good can North Carolina
really be in football?
Of course after the Tar Heels, it
will be that time. The time when
all those pickup trucks and tractortrailers
come rolling down 1-26,
stopping at every truck stop to refuel
and take a picture with the
wife/sister and kids. The time
when that obnoxious orange is
everywhere and the faint smell of
livestock taints the air. Hey, maybe
they'll wear those lovely purple
jerseys? Wouldn't that just be
dandy.
I'm talking about Clemson, our
archrival and hated in-state enemy.
By the way, they are ACCchamps.
And they did beat Appalachian
State pretty good (of
course, we tied Louisiana Tech ?

AFC is getting better and the NFC
is getting worse. The NFC stranglehold
on the Super Bowl could
end this year, and will probably
end next year. I see the Kansas
City Chiefs, Houston Oilers, Denver
Broncos, New York Jets, L.A.
Raiders and yes, the Dick
McPherson-led New England Patriots
as being legitimate contenders
for many years to come.
The NFC has the Redskins, the
Eagles with Cunningham back
next season, the Saints, the resurgent
Cowboys and ...who? The
Vikings, Bears, Giants and 49ers
are declining. The Falcons and
Lions are one-shot wonders that
need serious defensive help. Who
else is left? The NFC dominated
the late Sixties, the AFC had the
Seventies and the NFC ruled the
Eighties. The pendulum is swingshot
at winn
but anyway. . . ). Remember the
old saying though (as broadcasting
icon Keith Jackson would
say:"Ohhh nellie, when the Gamecocks
and Tigers get together fans,
you can throw out the record
books 'cause we got us a good
old-fashioned Hatfield and McCoy
here." Wait a minute. Hatfield?
That name sounds familiar.
Doesn't he coach some high
school in Texas? Maybe it's just
me.
On another college football note,
it was no less than the greatest college
football victory ever as Tennessee
came back to defeat Notre
Dame at the Catholic Dome in
South Bend.
I don't like the Irish (the team,

both are talented guys, I
can't see how their teams' owners

Assuming we get a Carolina
NFL expansion team, what should
we name it? I like the sound of the
Carolina Reapers, or something
mean like that. Of course, we'll
probably end up with a sissy name
like the Carolina Bumblebees. I
tried to think of a cool name for
the team relating to our region's
history, but the Carolina Rebels
probably wouldn't be too P.C.

every college football season there
is the great No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup.
Well, Saturday here it is again
as Miami visits in-state rival and
top-ranked Florida State. If anything,
it could be called the Bad
Sports Bowl. Maybe Terrell Buckley
and a host of Hurricanes will
collide in the middle of the field
and rise up as new people. (Oh,
pardon me Gino for that late hit.
Let's be friends.) Just a dream.
