As NBA sea Mutombo cc Kpur * Rich Taylor Hoop Hype ... Although the NBA season is barely underway, Denver already appears to be the league's most improved team. The primary reason for the Nug(Tftts1 lintrrnHf ic 1.1 ppnfpr ni. fO* ^ vv?.?v* kembe Mutombo, late of Georgetown, who Denver selected with the fourth overall pick of the 1991 draft. A native of Zaire, Mutombo came to the Nuggets with a reputation of being a great defender and shot blocker. But few realized he possessed the offensive skills he has displayed in the preseason and first two regular season games. During the exhibition season, Mutombo averaged 21 points and 13 rebounds. Then, after scoring 18 points and grabbing 16 boards in Friday's season opening 3-point loss to Golden State, Mutombo erupted for 27 points, 17 rebounds and 5 blocked shots in Saturday'sovertime win over Houston, outplaying all-NBA center Hakeem Olajuwon in the process. After Mutombo burned the Sixers for 21 points and 19 boards in the preseason, Charles Barkley said, "He's going to be a stud. I thought he was the best player in the draft. There are teams that made a big mistake by not drafting him earlier." One team that could have drafted Mutombo but didn't is the Charlotte Hornets, who instead made UNLV's Larry Johnson the No. 1 pick of the draft.
