Hornets sign

Johnson finally in camp, the Charlotte
Hornets can open their fourth
year with a new coach, a new system
and what thev hope will be a
new attitude.
Johnson signed a contract Wednesday
that will pay him nearly
$20 million over the next six
years. He missed all 27 days of
preseason drills, but is expected to
play tonight when the Hornets face
the Boston Celtics. He'll be playing
for Allan Bristow, Charlotte's
third coach.
The Nevada-Las Vegas AllAmerican
has already experienced
a winning tradition. Charlotte has
not, although its won-lost record
improved from 19 in the 1989-90
season to 26 victories this past season.
It's hoped that Johnson will
team with Kendall Gill, Charlotte's
No. 1 draft pick this past season,

"You know Kendall's going to
give 100 percent all the time,"
Bristow said. "He's a very toughminded
person all the time."

he questioned his teammates' character
and wondered aloud if the
team hated losing as much as he
did. Gill even suggested that the
team might have just quit emotionally
with 14 games left in the
season.
"I was so ticked off. I was asking
myself, 'Is this the way the
rest of my NBA career will go?'"
he said. "I was at a point where I
could only take so much. If I'd
kept what I was feeling inside, I
would have had real problems with
myself and my teammates."
If the Hornets want to keep Gill
from going off this year, it will be
a matter of the entire team adjusting
to Bristow's new style.
"We'll play a different system
with an up-tempo offense and a
pressure defense," Bristow said.
"With our kind of players I think
that's the kind of team we have.
"It's a fun system. It's fun to
play and fun to coach," he said.

to pressure your young guys too
much. Mike is a quiet leader. His
age and experience should help."
Bristow doesn't put much stock
in speculation that forward J.R.
Reid will be fighting for playing
time once Johnson joins the team.
"Larry Johnson is going to be
good for 'J,'" he says. "They're
going to spend more time worrying
about who they're playing against,
not battling each other."
With the fast-paced offense and
pressing defense, the Hornets
coach suggested that both players
will get plenty of playing time.

"I think the fans should expect
to see the team continue to progress
and see some basketball as it's
meant to be played," he said.
"We're a young team, and that
means our confidence is very fragile.
It's our job as coaches to
make sure we stay positive all
year."
"A lot depends on chemistry,"
Bristow said. "I'm a big believer
in chemistry, but I can't predict if
they'll mesh together."
Will the winning attitudes combine
with the youth to provide
more victories than the team has
experienced in its brief history?
"That could be one big byproduct
of all this work," Bristow
said.

USC Sports Roundup
Basketball team to scrimmage
This Saturday, the USC basketball team will scrimmage at 10 a.m.
at the Carolina Coliseum. It will be the only open scrimmage prior to
the first exhibition game.
The team will be split into two squads and play two 20-minute
halves. The teams and coaches have not been announced. The scrimmage
is free and free Gamecock posters and schedule cards will be
given away.
Men's swim team the first
to win SEC contest at USC
The USC men's swimming team became the first team at USC to
win an SEC dual event as the Gamecocks crushed Alabama, 143-98,
Thursday at the Sol Blatt P.E. Center.
The first ever win over Alabama was led by Mark Smith, winning
both the 200 individual medley and the 200 breaststroke. While Matt
Borman contributed by winning both the one and three-meter diving
competitions.
On the women's side, the Lady Gamecocks' Tiffany Sniegocki won
the one-meter diving competition just ahead of teammate Vivian Alberty.
However, the dominance of the Crimson Tide gave them a
136-99 victory over the Lady Gamecocks.
Coming off a loss on Thursday, the Lady Gamecocks were ready as
the USC men's and women's swim teams hosted Gamecock Relays
on Saturday. Participating in the relays along with USC were UNCWilmington
and College of Charleston.
The Lady Gamecocks dominated the relays by beating both UNCW
and CC impressively 77-44 and 74-47. The men's relay teams were
also able to come out with victories rolling over both their opponents
70-47.
Both USC teams hosted the Virginia Tech Hokies Sunday. The1
USC women won every event except the 100 freestyle. On the men's
side, the team beat the Hokies 143-95. The men's swim team is now
4-0, the best start in school history. The women improve their record
to 3-1.
