USC students will be able to boldly go where no one has gone before
as they take a trip through space and time with Sandy Fries.
Fries is a creative writer who has won much acclaim for his work on
the legendary Star Trek. He will be giving a seminar and guest lecture
tomorrow in the Russell House Ballroom.
After graduating from Clark University in Worcester, Mass. with a BA
in Journalism, he continued his education by receiving a Masters in Journalism
from Columbia University. He has written for numerous TV
shows such as, Quantum Leap, Fame, The Tonight Show, Different
Strokes and The Snorks.
He also had an opportunity to write for the The Simpsons, but it fell
through. However, Fries is most renowned for his work on the televison
show Star Trek.
According to agent Randall Magnum, Star Trek producer Gene Roddenbery
called Fries over the telephone and gave him a one sentence
idea. Fries then developed a story outline and from there devised a plot
for the TV show, which paved the way for future story ideas. Although
Star Trek VI is scheduled for a winter release, Fries isn't part of the
project.
In addition to his prestigious work on Star Trek, Fries has made many
other notable achievements. Among them are, an Emmy nomination for
his work on Star Trek, guest lectures at UCLA and the University of
Southern California's Lee Strasberg Institute, an NBC fellowship at Columbia
University.
At this week's presentation, Fries will critique an original Star Trek
episode and discuss a behind-the-scenes story of how each episode was
created. He will also analyze students' literary portfolios.

be tips on breaking into show business as a TV writer, everything you
wanted to know about Star Trek but were afraid to ask, and the opportunity
to find out about more information on becoming a part of Fries'
journalism class.
On a sad note, fans of Star Trek everywhere are mourning the loss of
the show's producer, Gene Roddenbery. He revolutionized science fiction
by developing a TV show everyone could enjoy.
Doors will open at 3:30 p.m. Admission for the program is $2 for
students with an USC ID and $3 for the general public.
