Stress and depression ? watch out for it, because it
can burn you out or drag you down and make your
life a living hell.
The feeling that interminable problems arise from
nothing is generally shared by the over-stressed and
those suffering from depression. With finals just around
the corner, and for those who have problems dealing
with the aggravation exams and term papers can
cause, be wary that help is available.
Dennis Pruitt, dean and vice president for Student
Affairs, oversees many of the programs at USC
created to help students cope with stress and
depression.

Students often do not make wise use of
their time, procrastinate and put things off until the
last minute. After about eight weeks into the semester,
they find themselves overwhelmed," Pruitt said.
"Up until now, students who were used to high
school and just getting by are finding out that life and
work in college requires some effort, and unlike high
school, they are finding out that when things get
rough their parents aren*t here to save or rescue them
from their problems," he said.
"When things do get to the stage where the student
is overwhelmed, he may experience burnout, or feeling
like an outsider and getting into a mindset that
everyone is doing better than me. This is where feelings
of depression can set in," Pruitt said.
Dr. Richard Lashley works for the Mental Health
Clinic at the Thompson Student Health Center as a
clinical social worker and deals with the more severe
cases of stress and depression. He offers advice for
prevention.

"Right along with that goes the possibility of o^
doing it on the job, whether it's a work/study jol

things and other extracurricular activities should

Barbara Grossberg is the executive director of
Mental Health Association in Mid-Carolina, an 01
nization that provides information and counseling
the Columbia area.
"Depression (among) .. . college students can
especially susceptible. People say that college is s
posed to be the best time of your life, but for some
with symptoms of depression, it can be a totally de
itating experience," Grossberg said.
"It is generally true that depression can be linke<
inactivity in its milder forms, and that people can ]
themselves out of it by involving themselves in act
ties and being around other people," she said.

Dr. Roger Bowersock is the Interim Director of
Counseling and Human Development Center.
"Stress can cause a lot of health problems," Bov
sock said. "The symptoms, for example, can
chronic and recurring headaches and stomach pi
lems, and we can give them something to control I
but then the issue becomes how do we get to
underlying cause?"
"I would say that underneath it all, students .. .

has its roots in the family structure and may shov
