The discussion features four prominent Columl women. Susan Davis, Director of the S.C. Comm sion on Women, Dr. Sue Rosser, Director of \\ men's Studies at USC, Jean Caughman, WIS TV ne anchor, and Dr. Judy VanSlyke Turk, Dean of t College of Journalism and Mass Communications USC will offer advice and insight on expanding c portunities for women. The emphasis on accenting the positive is cleai reflected in the lives and careers of two of the pam ists, Ms. Caughman and Dr. Turk. Both have cop with many obstacles to become successful. Caughman credits her success to patience. "Y< have to invest a lot of yourself," she said, while poii ing out that a career takes time, especially in broa casting in order to build an audience. Turk agrees with Caughman's positive minds* While mentioning "ambition, opportunities, and su port of the people who have encouraged me" as se rets of her success, Turk also pays homage to havii a "lot of luck". However, Turk faced uncertainty while decidir whether to accept her present job at USC. Acceptir the position meant relocating and leaving her husbar behind in Ohio, which she recalls as being a "b risk." Turk points to this as one of many "trade-offs" th women must make in going after opportunities. Whi Turk believes that opportunities are growing for w< men, she says that most women are not taking advai tage of them because they are not trained to be a; gressive. Turk also contends that women have I make harder sacrifices than men, sometimes having choose between marriage or a family and career. Turk has also found herself having to cope with sexual discrimination. In a public relations job she once held at a bank, there was an opening for a media representative that involved "big money deals". She P" felt that she was "fully qualified". However, she was told that it would not be appropriate for her to have ^ the job, as men would not accept a woman as their prime media representative. ig ig As a result of their experiences, both women offer id advice for young women today. Caughman believes in ig internships, and urges women to go after them. Turk advises women to have a career plan.
