The USC Gamecocks have a
perfect opportunity Saturday to try
to return some confidence to a disappointing
team when the East
Tennessee State Buccaneers come
to town for Homecoming.
But they'll have to do it shorthanded.
Vincent Dinkins, starting
left guard on the offensive line,
underwent surgery Wednesday to
repair a torn medial collateral ligament
in his left knee and will miss
the remainder of the season. Dinkins
injured the knee during practice
Tuesday.
Dinkins, a 6-2, 284 lb. redshirt
freshman from Columbia, had
started all four games for the
Gamecocks this season. Barring

Too bad there aren't lights at
The Graveyard.
Too bad for the College of
Charleston, that is.
The Cougars fell in overtime 5-4
to USC Wednesday in a game
called because of darkness. But it
was only after pushing the eighthranked
Gamecocks to one of their
toughest games of the season.
"College of Charleston was
primed for this game," USC head
coach Mark Berson said. "Our
guys showed tremendous heart and
courage in coming back.
"This was not the best game
we've played and College of Charleston
really played well. They
didn't catch us off guard, though.
We have to give their guys a lot of
credit," he said.
The Cougars, 5-4-1, led the
Gamecocks ? winners of their last
six matches ? for part of the
match and were forced twice to
score equalizing goals, but Andrew
Coggins' score in the overtime
period, and the darkness, kept
Charleston from registering the

complications, Dinkins could return
to the football field in time for
spring practice.
Expected to replace Dinkins is
6-3, 285 lb. senior Dany Branch,
with redshirt freshman Antwan
Jackson slated as Branch's backup.
Several other Gamecocks are
currently banged up and their status
won't be determined until
game time.
Tight end Mathew Campbell
and comerback Toby Cates, both
suffered sprained ankles and were
listed as out on Sunday. Cates is
out at least one week, and normally
would be replaced by senior
Antonio Walker. However, Walker

With just under a minute remaining
in the first overtime,
freshman Chris Faklaris slid the
ball to Coggins right in front of the
Cougar net. The senior captain
poked the ball in for a 5-4 Gamecock
lead. Five minutes into the
second overtime period, as the
Cougars lined up for a corner kick,
referee Paul Wright called the
match because of darkness.
"I know the scoreboard shows
that we won," Berson said, "but
I there were really no losers here."
The Gamecocks, 8-1, controlled
1 the early going of the match, getting
the game's first goal when
freshman Bill Baumhoff's cross
was headed by Coggins past Cougar
goalkeeper Greg Weiss at the
14:26 mark.
Eight minutes later former
Gamecock Ryan Kurtz equalized
the game, when he took the ball in
the goal box, faked a USC defender
and beat goalie Spencer Leud
ers. It was the first goal scored on
Leuders in his college career.
The 1-1 tie at halftime was no
thing compared to the flurry of action
in the second half.

the next 10 minutes, finally getting
an equalizer of their own when
Faklaris, dribbling far right of the
Cougar goal hit a shot that went
into the left side of the net.
Sophomore Matt Haiduk gave
the Gamecocks their second lead
of the contest at the 70:24 mark,
scoring on a double assist from
Coggins and midfielder Ruben Tufino.
