By JACK DUNN

Deep in the bowels of the earth,
in the cavernous basement of a
warehouse relegated to use by several
area musical groups, a band
rehearses material for an upcoming
gig.
Dave Reynolds on guitar, Wally
Spires on drums, Dan Sennema on
bass and a guy named Red on vocals,
make up the four-piece hardrock
band called Rude Lucy, who
will be playing this weekend at the
Cockpit.
The sound as a whole is skillfully
mixed and produced as the
band gears up and runs through a
possible set of hard-rock covers
and originals. You could probably
count on a Zep cover or two, but

From Alice Cooper and Aerosmith,
to Skid Row, Queensryche
and Guns 'n' Roses, Rude Lucy
covers the history of hard rock in
its set list of about 30 songs. Ten
of the songs on their set list are originals,
and of the two I heard,
"What You Need," and "Please
Tease Me," while not deeply
thought-provoking in the lyrics,
were solidly entertaining songs
that blended well with the other
material.
In interviewing a band of this
sort a certain question arises. How
did you come up with the name?
"We were almost a couple of

other names," Sennema said. "We
were almost Trailer Trash, and we
were almost Idiots with Guns. I
liked the name Lickety Split, but
the rest of the guys didn't like the
'ih-ih' sound. Then I said, 'Well,
what kind of sound do you want?'
Then we were almost Loose
Rooster."
All of these names have a kind
of southern feel about them, so
what is the significance of Rude
Lucy? Sennema said something
about overhearing a conversation
about a bikini waxing job gone
awry. I prob ' into this question
no further hat's in a name
anyway?
How did the nd get started?
"Dan and Dave were in a band
previous to this one," Spires said.
"I answered an ad in the paper a
day late after it had quit running.
They looked at my drum set and
the way I played, and I've been
with them ever since."
Reynolds and I were looking for
a drummer that was loud enough
to play with us for about two
years," Sennema said. "We saw his
set and heard him play, and it all
came across like a wall of sound.
So we both had to go out and buy
new amps just to get loud enough
to play with him."
