Nothing brings people out of the woods like a football game, and homecoming is the second biggest game of the season, behind Clemson. This season's opponent is the nasi lennessee iiaie cuccaneers, a 1-3 Division I-AA team from Johnson City, Tenn. With an enrollment of 11,750, the Bucs are a member of the Southern Conference. This is the first meeting between the two teams. The Gamecocks are bringing a 16-game Homecoming winning streak into this weekend's contest. The last time a USC squad lost on Homecoming was 1974, when the Virginia Tech Hokics defeated USC 31-17. So far this season, the Bucs have, Inst to SamfnrH Western Carolina and the Virginia Military Institute. Their lone victory came against nearby Newberry College this past weekend. ETSU is coached by Don Riley and is 9-24-0 during his tenure. While point spreads are not made for games against I-AA teams, the Gamecocks are favorites to rack up their 17th consecutive Homecoming win and their first against the Buccaneers. Over the years, the Gamecocks have defeated such teams as Duke, Maryland, North ^ Carolina State, North Carolina and Virginia on Homecoming. However, USC has dropped Homecom- ^ ing games to the likes of Florida State, Georgia, Louisiana State and The Citadel. Pretty lofty teams to 1U slate for Homecoming, wouldn't pan< you say. The normal procedure for Homecoming games is to pick a pansy team that equals an automatic win. Well, 34 times since 1930, this has been the case, but 24 times, the pansy has come out on top over the Gamecocks, and one time, the game ended in a tie. However, the University of Virginia Cavaliers are Homecoming's leading loser, having lost five games to the Gamecocks on Homecoming while failing to win a game.
