he does not adequately maximize
his players' potential as a gooc
coach should.
This brings us to a second, ye
different school of thought preva
lent among some Gamecock fans
It might be called the "We
shouldn't expect so much because
the players are just not that good'
theory. These folks believe thai

average players that are not ta
lented enough to win more games
than they have over the last two
plus years.
Take for instance our wide re
ceiver corps, which has beei
labeled "as good as any in th(
country." To quote a longtimt
Gamecock fan I spoke with recen
tly, "Our receivers are supposed tc
be so great, but not one of then
would have a prayer of starting a
Miami." Complaints about our of
fensive line, defensive line ant
placekicker are also in vogue. "W<
can't block, we have no pass rusl
and the kicker is pathetic," is <
common refrain.
Although I certainly don't be

potential this season, I do feel tha
overly optimistic Gamecock fan;
have a penchant for having inflatet
opinions of the football team's in
dividual talent, only to becomt
disgruntled when they realize w<

are far from being only average
And though I maintain that losing
to The Citadel and East Carolina i:
embarrassing and unacceptable, th(
"our players are no good" argu
ment not only doesn't wash, it ii
ridiculous.
The third and final theory per
taining to the Gamecocks' trouble;
concerns the team's youth. Thi;
analysis holds that the coaching
and talent is not a problem, that i
is instead the team's youthfu
make-up that is responsible for th<
Gamecocks' lousy start.
Bull.
Yes, the Gamecocks' secondary
is young and inexperienced. Got
forbid, they've played like it. But i
young football team does not have
to be a poor football team. As ?
matter of fart ronnflp.ss tp.am*
younger than the Gamecocks have
been great football teams.

or seniors in the starting line-up.
Compare this past season's coi
national champion Georgia Tech's

started 8 seniors, 7 juniors, 6 sot
phomores and 1 freshman. How
! about Florida State, who as I re
call, had a pretty good year in
j 1990. The Seminoles started 5
- (yes, 5) seniors, 9 juniors, 7 sophomores
and 1 freshman.
Want more? Try N.C. State,
i who defeated the Gamecocks
i 38-29 last season in Raleigh. That
i veteran bunch started 5 seniors, 7
- juniors, 6 sophomores and 4 fresh)
man. Gee, you can win with freshi
men after all.
t One more noint about vouth and
inexperience. The Gamecocks will
i lose their top four wide receivers,
s three of the team's four starting
i linebackers, two of the three start*
ing defensive linemen and their
starting quarterback after this season.
If inexperience is our problem
s this year, next season is really got
ing to be a nightmare. Or poor
3 excuse.
1 So what is the Gamecocks'
problem? Coaching? The players?
* Youth?
J Again, there is no perfect ant
swer to this troubling question, but
5 a gooa guess wouia oe a comoination
of the three. Woods must iml
prove as a head coach, and that
> very likely will necessitate hiring
* assistant coaches during the offseason
who have already proven
> themselves at the Division 1 level
(ala Tommy West and Miles
Aldridge).
> The players must reach down
5 deep and play better football, plain
I and simple. They may not be the
t most talented bunch in the country,
1 but I'm sure Bobby Fuller would
- be the first to tell you they are better
than East Carolina.
Lastlv. the team must auit hid
' ing behind the thin veil of "y?ut^"
and play like the not so youthful
| group they actually are (see num"
bers above).
; If this transformation does not
. come soon, very soon, it will be a
; lpng, long year for Sparky Woods
t and his Gamecock football team,
i And a heyday for the critics.

Week five in the NFL was a

Of course, the San Francisco

The aforementioned 49ers are
