Typewriters, walkie talkies,
balloons, frying pans and
cookie tins were just a few
of the instruments used last
Wednesday aftrenoon when USC students
joined the Dave Smith Jazz
Quartet in making beautiful music
together.
There was no sheet music. There
was no script. Students were told to
just "go on without asking what lies
before or behind."
What resulted was a confused
audience who sat wondering what
was going on at the Russell House
Patio.
What they saw were about eight
students walking around on stage
blowing saxophones, banging Crying
pans, popping balloons, playing the
banjo with a metal fork, and talking
into walkie talkies. What many of
them heard was a bunch of noise that

did not combine to form any one song
or rhythm.
The purpose of this two-hour performance
was to join ideas with ideas,
according to the Quartets spokesman,
Cecil Taylor. It was to "reflect the
musical effect of actions as they may
be perceived in the course of daily
life."
Taylor said it is one thing to play,
but another step to take something
that is not considered an instrument
and create a sound. To do this, the
Quartet gathered USC students, many
of which who were non-musicians.
"We pretty much felt that everyone
is a musician, and the audience is a
musician just by listening," Taylor
said.
But that is where Taylor received
some of the opposition he has witnessed
since he joined the quartet.
The USC Music Departmentobjected
to the performance because of the use
of non-musicians.
