Gamecx By L.S. LICHTENFELD Staff Writer To say there was nothing flat in West Virginia would be a lie. In Saturday's game against the Mountaineers, the Gamecocks were completely flat for the first half of football and this lack o? emotion could be the main reason for the 21-16 loss. "We have a lot of young players who have to learn to play from the beginning of the game," said Coach Woods, trying to explain USC's early lack of direction. The Gamecocks failed to move the ball well in the first half, amassing a meager 96 total yards. The highlight of those yards being a 16 yard Robert Brooks reverse. The only scoring attempt of the half for the Gamecocks was a 47-yard field goal try, which fell short and right. The offense was not to be outdone, though. The defense lacked any ability to stop the Mountaineer Missed ch in 2-1 los! By BRANT LONG Copy Desk Chief Time ran out on the Gamecock soccer team Sunday as they dropped their first game of the season to seventh-ranked North Carolina 2-1 in overtime at The Graveyard. But it took a valiant effort by USC, 2-1, to force the extra time against the Tar Heels. Down 1-0 late in regulation and without senior captain Andrew Coggins, who was ejected with a red card on a controversial call, the ninth-ranked Gamecocks needed some magic ... and got it from sophomore defender Helgi Bjorgvinsson. After numerous USC opportunities to tie the game, Bjorgvinsson took a pass from Rob Smith at the 85:07 mark and drilled a 40-yard shot that beat UNC goalkeeper Watson Jennison into the top right corner of the net and sent the packed house at The Graveyard into a frenzy. "We lost our concentration with about five minutes left," Tar Heel head coach Elmar Bolowich said, "and their defender took a nice shot from 40 yards out that left our goalkeeper flat-footed. That should not have happened at that stage in the game, especially after they had missed so many opportunities earlier to tie the game." And missed opportunities were the key in the loss. Early in the oam? frp.shman Bill Rfliimhnff crossed the ball in front of the goal to Coggins, whose shot sailed high. Later in the first half, Baumhoff let go with a 30-yard shot that went wide left of the goal. "We had so many chances to score in this game," USC head coach Mark Berson said. "I think we hit three posts and had a couple of shots point-blank that were knocked down inside the area. The field was tilted uphill against us all day. CP A M DV A XI K>y IV X /111 Staff Writer The Lady Gamecock volleyball team ran into a tough squad from Sam Houston State on Sunday, falling 3 games to none. Their record now stands at 4-5 with the loss at the Sol Blatt P.E. center. The Lady Bearcats, from Huntsville, Texas, dominated the match winning the games with scores of 15-9, 15-7 and 15-6. Sam Houston improved to 11-3. Bonnie Kenny, entering her eighth year as head coach, was disturbed with the loss. "We should have been a lot more fired up to play," she said. "We should be embarrassed by our lack of effort and intensity" Caryn Case had 6 kills and 7 digs, in the losing effort. Sophomore Amy Collinsworth had 8 assisted blocks to lead the team. The Lady Gamecocks travel to Clemson for a Tuesday night match, where they will try to end their four-match losing streak. The team returns home to play College of Charleston Sept. 24. The Mountaineers had 279 total yards for the first half and dominated the Gamecocks defense. Then, the best thing that could have happened to the Gamecocks came: halftime. The Gamecocks came out of the locker room renewed and seemingly a different team. After a slow start that cppmp/l to mirror thp first half, the defense finally stopped the Mountaineers. This was to mark the first the time the Gamecocks would hold West Virginia to four plays. The Mountaineers would not score again in the game. The Gamecocks would now piece together their first scoring drive, consisting of a 48-yard Eddie Miller reception and a Brandon Bennett touchdown run, his first as ances key 5 to UNC guys just showed so much character. I'm just very pleased." The Tar Heels, 4-0-1, took the lead for good in the last of two 15-minute overtime periods. Freshman forward Ben Di Meo made a long run down the right side of the field at the 108:56 mark and beat USC goalie David Turner into the left side of the goal. UNC got their first goal with just over 30 minutes gone in the match when Gamecock freshman defender Jamie Posnanski's pass back to Turner was intercepted by Tar Heel midfielder Adam Tinkham. Tinkham nnf thf? hall nasi Turner into the left side of the net for the 1-0 advantage. "We made a bad mistake early in the game that put us behind," Berson said. 'The guys kept fighting but I thought that that unnerved us a little bit towards the end of the first half, but they regrouped and played so well." USC will be without Coggins for Wednesday's match against Erskine because of an NCAA rule which suspends a player for one match following a red card. "I think we'll adjust to it," Berson said. "We'll just have to play without him. We've got some good guys up front that came in and did real well today." The Gamecocks outshot the Tar Heels 24-21 in the match. "I believe kicking the field goal at the end of the game was the right decision," Coach Sparky Woods said. With 4:35 left in the game, Woods feeling confident the defense, on an emotional high, could maintain their level of play called for a normal kickoff. The Mountaineers simply ran the clock out trom that point. The Gamecocks proved once again they are incapable of playing a full 60 minutes of football. "We worked good last week in practice," linebacker Gerald Dixon said. "And I don't know why we came up so flat." Unless something changes soon, Gamecock fans might be in for a long season.
